Oriel Celtic Football Club was an underage soccer club founded in 1989 in Monaghan Town by Sean McCaffrey. The club started with one U15 boys’ team, but due to lack of opposition at U15 level in the surrounding area, the team became an U16 team after only 2 matches, playing 22 matches with local school teams, club teams in surrounding counties both sides of the border, before going to compete in the Norway Cup[1] at end of the first season, in a 192-team tournament and getting to the last 16 before losing on penalties to FK Mandalskameratene (Norway).[2]
The club rapidly developed from one U-15 boys’ team into multiple schoolboy teams at Under-8,[3] Under-10,[4] Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, an Under-18 youth team and two girls teams at Under-14 and Under-16 level[5] within two seasons, and went on to win several European competitions, including the U-16 Holland Cup[6] in August 1991, the U-14 London Cup in August 1992,[7] and runners-up of the U-15 Marne Trophy in April 1994 (with the North-Eastern Counties Representative Team).[8] As a result of the football contacts Sean made throughout the years in England and Ireland, he was able to encourage top professional youth teams to Monaghan, clubs such as Queens Park Rangers F.C.,[9]Liverpool F.C.,[10]Manchester United F.C.[11] and AFC Ajax[12] to play against Oriel Celtic F.C. in friendly matches.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] During the first season Sean got a number of local people involved with the club to help with fundraising events and coaching. He called upon his friend and mentor Patrick Vincent Turley (PVT), Liam McCooey and Mickey Smyth to assist with the coaching.[23][24][25]
At the start of Season 2 in 1990, Oriel Celtic was flooded with more underage players, both boys and girls that wanted to play soccer. Sean McCaffrey immediately brought in additional local people and friends interested in getting involved with the club to coach and fundraise, such as Martin Neeson and Ken Bardini.[26] A committee was formed and by the end of season, Oriel Celtic had won a number of domestic leagues and cups. In the summer of 1991, the Oriel Celtic U-16 team, captained by Sean’s youngest brother Conor, went to Amsterdam and won the Holland Cup[27], winning all 7 games, scoring 30 goals, conceding 2 and keeping 6 clean sheets.[28] The final was televised.[29] Oriel Celtic attracted over 350 boys and girls at different age levels and went on to win domestic leagues and cups throughout the age groups.[30]
Sean McCaffrey arranged soccer trials with the Ireland National underage teams and English professional teams for players such as Tom Mohan (current Irish U-19 manager as of 2022), Shay Corrigan, Gerard “Bunty” McCabe and Mickey Wilson.

In October 1989, a group of school friends in Beech Hill College, Monaghan were playing school yard soccer (Conor McCaffrey, Shay Corrigan, Colm MacCinna and Stephen Connolly) and wanted to form a team. There was no underage soccer team in Monaghan Town to join at that time. Conor approached his older brother Sean to take them on some coaching sessions. However, Sean had already invested 8-years in forming, coaching and developing Monaghan United F.C. and had parted company with them in 1987 and became disillusioned with soccer at this point in time. Patrick Vincent Turley (commonly known as PVT) [32][33][34] a well-known and highly respected sports and political journalist and form editor of the Northern Standard Newspaper in Monaghan, was Sean McCaffrey’s mentor and close friend that help encouraged Sean to form Oriel Celtic in 1989. PVT was also one of the main driving forces in the formation of Monaghan United F.C. in 1979.
Over a number of weeks Conor continued to wear Sean down, until finally he said, “How many players are interested?”, Conor replied “17”. Sean’s response was “Ok, we’ll have a meeting at 6pm in Beech Hill Gym on Friday. If anyone is late or someone doesn’t turn up, I’m turning on my heels and leaving.” That Friday in October 1989 arrived, and Sean went to Beech Hill College Gym, walked in and didn’t say a word, just counted the number of players in the room. Of course, all 17 players were accounted for. Sean threw his eyes up to the sky as if to say, “here we go again” and that was the beginning of Oriel Celtic F.C.[35]
The 17 founders of Oriel Celtic Football Club are: Conor McCaffrey, Colm MacCinna, Shay Corrigan, Shane McGeough, Shane McDonnell, Donal Skinnader, Stephen Connolly, Shane McKenna, Sean Gilbride, Mickey McEntee, Glen Murphy, Martin McKenna, Ciaran McKenna, Finbarr O’Connor, Ian McGuiness, Paddy Treanor and Paul O’Hanlon.[36]
Training sessions twice a week immediately commenced at Beech Hill College and, by the second week the 17 had become 30 players. Only a handful of the lads had ever played a game of soccer and those were only school teams, but the lads were enthusiastic and soon graduated to playing friendly matches against school sides, then friendlies with soccer clubs in Dundalk, County Louth, that were playing regularly in competitions at different age-levels. The excellent coaching and progress made enabled the club to seek stronger opposition from further afield like Lurgan Celtic, County Armagh and Belvedere Boys, Dublin under head coach and old friend of PVT and Sean McCaffrey; Noel O’Reilly, regarded as one of the top youth coaches in Dublin, having managed Irish youth teams.[37] There was very few U15 matches available for Oriel Celtic to play in, so this quickly forced the club to compete at U16 level. The Oriel Celtic U16 team brought the club its first trophy by winning the Roy Crawley Cup, in the Lisnaskea Youth Tournament in May 1990, in preparation for the Norway Cup in Oslo in the summer of 1990.[38]
The head coach at Oriel Celtic was Sean McCaffrey, known throughout the club in affectionate terms as “The Big Man”. Ken Bardini was a lifelong friend of Sean and rarely ever referred to him as anything other than the big man.
[39] Liam McCooey was founder member of Monaghan Hibernian Junior soccer team at the age of 17 and played with a fair bit of success. Monaghan Hibernian and Monaghan Town amalgamated to form Monaghan United F.C. in 1979. Liam joined the Oriel Celtic coaching staff to manage the U14 team in 1990. His team was commonly known within the club circles as ‘Liam’s Lads’, saying “I joined Oriel Celtic because of my belief in what they are doing to foster the confidence and self-esteem of our young lads.”[40][41]
Grounds
Unfortunately Oriel Celtic never achieved the ultimate goal in securing their own football ground but were generously supported by the Monaghan community to use their facilities on a continual basis, mainly Belgium Park and St. Davnets in Monaghan Town. Other local junior teams in County Monaghan like Killylough (Tydavnet), Glennon (Emyvale) and Donagh Celtic (Emyvale) facilitated Oriel Celtic on multiple occasions also.[42]
Established facilities were made available to Oriel Celtic for hosting the QPR and Liverpool matches, by Monaghan United F.C. in Gortakeegan and The Monaghan Rugby Club respectively.

Committee
The Oriel Celtic Committee comprised of mainly the players parents, organising fund raising events, obtaining sponsorship from local businesses in Monaghan and surrounding areas, managing finances and handling logistics, without the hard work of these selfless volunteers Oriel Celtic would not have had the opportunity to continue on its success. The Management Committee Members were Francis Treanor (Chairman), Gerry Clancy (Vice-Chairman), Mickey Smyth (Hon. Secretary), Agnes Summers (Asst. Secretary), Florence McKenna (Hon. Treasurer), Marie Treanor (Asst. Treasurer), Patrick V. Turley (Public Relations Office). The Committee Members were Sean McCaffrey, Philip O’Sullivan, Seamus McAleer, Liam McCooey, Delia McCooey, Kate Smyth, Ken Bardini, Gene Gormley, Johnny Keenan, Brian Cassidy, Ann Clancy, Martin Neeson, John Corrigan, Sean Leonard, and Vera Treanor.

Sponsorship
Oriel Celtics first main sponsor was the Monaghan Credit Union in 1990. With the help and support of the Credit Union, Oriel Celtic could afford to enter competitions and ultimately go to the Norway Cup.[49] In 1992, the T.S.B. sponsored the club[50]
Season 1 – 1989-1990
Oriel Celtic U15 team played and won their first match, a challenge match against Sean McCaffrey’s old school team, St. Macartan’s College in Belgium Park, Monaghan Town. Incidentally, Belgium Park was Monaghan United F.C. original ground before they moved to Gortakeegan. Due to lack of opposition at U15 level in the area, by Game 3 the team played at U16 level to avail of local opposition such as Carrick Rovers, Clones Town and a newly formed Monaghan United F.C. schoolboy team.
In December 1989, only 3 months after the club started, three players were sent for U15 Ireland Schoolboy trials: Shay Corrigan, Mickey McEntee and Paul O’Hanlon. On 8th December 1989, an all-day indoor soccer marathon at Beech Hill College to raise club funds, it was a league structure with semi-finals and a final. Colm MacCinna’s team beating Shay Corrigan’s team 14-12 in the final, with Shay Corrigan receiving player of the tournament and John McConnell receiving the most sporting player of the tournament. Regarding Oriel Celtic Sean said “I was forced back into football by these lads and now I am not sorry for they are a great bunch and there is a great spirit in the club.”[51]

In preparation of the 1990 Norway Cup U16 tournament starting at the end of July 1990, in the Ekeberg Recreation Park in Oslo, Sean McCaffrey got in contact with Noel O’Reilly of Belvedere F.C. seeking two experienced players to strengthen the team for the summer tournament, Ronan Smith and Ger Browne, both Irish Schoolboy Internationals from Dublin joined the squad. In addition to this, Sean also called upon Lurgan Celtic F.C. from Northern Ireland seeking two experienced players, Paul Towe and Pat McGibbon joined the team and five challenge matches took place and intense training during the summer in Beech Hill College. The Oriel Celtic U16 team brought the club its first trophy by winning the Roy Crawley Cup, in the Lisnaskea Youth Tournament in May 1990.[52] Then competing against Lurgan Celtic F.C. and Dundalk side Bellurgan.

In 1990, the Norway Cup in Oslo was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the World’s Largest Soccer Tournament, with over 1,100 teams entered at various age levels. There were 192 teams entered at U16 level, in 4-team groups, Oriel Celtic reached the last 16, when losing 4-3 on penalties to FK Mandalskameratene (Norway), who went on to be beaten 1-0 in the semi-final by the eventual winners, Lillestrøm SK, a top professional team in Norway. The logistics involved in the organisation of the Norway Cup was mind-boggling, but the efficiency, courtesy and helpfulness of the volunteers who run the competition made it all go smoothly, with a vast task in organising accommodation for 1,100 teams of boys and girls from U12 to U18 from all over the world. Oriel Celtic was accommodated in two classrooms in a school (name) with players from other countries like Brazil, USA and USSR. Anticipating the task of looking after 27 players, the club brought PVT, Liam McCooey, Noel Turley (PVTs son and former Monaghan Untied player), Terry and Brendan McCaffrey (Sean’s younger brothers that both also played for Monaghan United in the early 1980s).[57]
After the Norway Cup the club was confronted with finding regular sterner competition as there was nothing available locally. The club recognised the fact that they would have to travel further afield and considered applying for admission to cross-border leagues (Northern Ireland) or as far as Donegal and then the Meath and District Schoolboy League (MDSL) came along to resolve the club’s dilemma. In addition to this, Oriel Celtic entered the National Cup competitions for the first time at every age group from U12 to U18. In the summer of 1990 Mickey Smyth joined the club to manage the newly formed U12 team. Oriel Celtic was about the development of young players rather than the collection of trophies.[58][59][60]

Season 2 – 1990-1991
After the 1990 World Cup, Sean McCaffrey organised for Stephen Staunton and Paul McGrath to make appearances in Monaghan and Cavan for a meet and greet in July. This was an opportunity for Oriel Celtic players and indeed the entire community to meet Irish International Soccer Stars that had just competed in the World Cup.[61][62] The interest in soccer in Monaghan and the surrounding areas mushroomed and the club started teams at various age groups to facilitate the demand. Teams at Under-8,[63] Under-10,[64] Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, an Under-18 youth team and two girls teams at Under-14 and Under-16 level[65] were all in motion.
The U18s won the Meath & District U18 League and Cup, securing the clubs first domestic double title.

Under 18 Liege Cup, 1991
The Liege Cup in Belgium, run by Standard Liège caught Oriel Celtic on the wrong foot, as it turned out to be an Under 20 competition for teams from Professional clubs all over Europe. Oriel Celtic reached the semi-final but lost to the eventual winners of the Liege Cup, from Belfast Linfield F.C., whose side was well bolstered by first team players. Oriel Celtic won the third place play off against MVV Maastricht.[87][88][89]

Oriel Celtic only played one game at under 17 level. On 4th of April 1991 Queens Park Rangers under 17 team visited Monaghan to play Oriel Celtic F.C. at Gortakeegan in a friendly match. Oriel Celtic Chairman, Brian Cassidy said “As this is the first occasion an English First Division Club has been represented on County Monaghan soil. Chris Gieler whose courtesy and co-operation made this game possible. It is a big step for a Youth Club only 18 months in existence to bring what was one of the top 3 Youth Teams in England over.”

Q.P.R. played a 4-4-2 formation and counteract this talented Q.P.R. team which included Danny Dichio and Kevin Gallen up front, Sean McCaffrey used a 5-2-3 formation in defence using a Sweeper and a 3-4-3 formation while on the attack, this produced a 3-2 victory to Oriel Celtic F.C. with 2 goals coming from Tom Mohan from central midfield. Incidentally, this type of formation is now widely used by top professional clubs and international teams all over the world.[94][95][96][97][98][99][100]

Under 16 Holland Cup, 1991
In July of 1991, the Oriel Celtic U16 team went to Amsterdam and won the U16 Holland Cup, winning all 7 games, scoring 30 goals, only conceding 2 and keeping 6 clean sheets, with no less than a 3-goal victory in each match. The support snowballed with each victory as the defeated sides came along to support the team. The final was televised by Dutch T.V. at which there were 5,000 spectators. This was the clubs first international tournament to be victorious in. Sean McCaffrey, Eamon Reilly and Ken Bardini were interviewed on a Sports TV programme. Sean’s brother Brendan travelled over from London to act as scout, casting a calculating eye over future opponents in the competition which consisted of 65 teams from 14 different countries. The team was captained by Sean McCaffrey’s youngest brother Conor.[125][126][127]

In July of 1991, the Oriel Celtic U14 team went to Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to compete in the Yorkshire Cup, coming third overall, playing 9 games, winning 7, drawing 2, losing 2, scoring 24 goals and only conceding 3 goals. They lost in the semi-final to eventual winners Upperthong (Dutch Team), that Oriel Celtic had already beaten in the first game of the tournament in the group stage. In April 1991, there was an appetite to start the first girls soccer team in County Monaghan.[181] By May 1991, there were 52 names on the list for girls soccer ranging from 10 to 18 years old, with a strong majority between the ages of 14 and 16.[182] On Saturday 25th May 1991, a historic day for girls soccer in County Monaghan, a mixture of U14 and U16 girls played a friendly match were 36 Oriel Celtic girls had 25 minute run-outs against Shambo girls from Navan, County Meath.[183]

A crowd of over 2,000 spectators turned up to watch Oriel Celtic take on Liverpool F.C. Youth Team at the Monaghan Rugby Club grounds, Rafeenan, County Monaghan, Liverpool won 5-1. Liverpool went 1-0 up within 30 mins and Oriel Celtic equalised 3 mins later with a Tom Mohan pass to Finian Cassidy to make it 1-1, with Liverpool scoring a second before half-time making it 2-1 at the interval. Only ten minutes into the second half, an Oriel Celtic defender scored an own goal making it 3-1, the game ended 5-1 to Liverpool. Altogether the Liverpool side included 5 players who appeared regularly on the Liverpool reserve team including Phil Charnock who also had played for the first team. This talented Liverpool side included Robbie Fowler, Dominic Matteo, Ashley Neal (Phil Neal’s son) and Mark Kenny and Rodney McAree. Lee Brydon was awarded Liverpool Man of the Match and Tom Mohan was awarded the Oriel Celtic Man of the Match. When Oriel Celtic U10s beat Kells Celtic 2-1 in the NEC Shield, Kells had won their previous weeks match 13-0. The U10s competed in a local Mini-Soccer League with Clones Town and Monaghan United, whereby Oriel Celtic entered an A, B, C and D Team. They also competed in the NEC Subsidiary Cup losing to Monaghan United 3-0.
In 1993, Sean McCaffrey took over as manager of the NEC U14 Kennedy Cup Selection Team and in 1994, Sean took NEC U15 team to the Marne Trophy in France, focusing more on the NEC league than club level, had a knock affect in terms of fielding so many Oriel Celtic underage teams. In Season 5, Oriel Celtic did not appear to have Under 18, Under 17, Under 16, Under 15 or Under 13 teams, there was possibility Under 11 and Under 10 Indoor leagues, however no newspaper evidence supports this.[389] NEC U15s lost in final of Marne Trophy [390] and the Oriel Celtic U14 team won the Solar Travel Holiday World Cup in Wales. [391]

In July 1995, the Oriel Celtic U16 team reached the quarterfinals out of 144 teams competing in the Gothia Cup, Gothenburg, Sweden, losing to Bolivian professional club Tahuichi, who came to tournament with a reputation, notably for winning the Dallas Cup beating Tottenham Hotspur F.C. 5-0 in the final. Manager Sean McCaffrey said “I have never seen such a high level of skill as displayed by the Bolivians.” The coaching staff consisted of Bob Smith, Marty Neeson, Ken Bardini and Gerard Neeson. Under 18 Team versus AFC Ajax
In May 1996, the Oriel Celtic U18 team played AFC Ajax at the Monaghan Rugby Club grounds, in a friendly match, under under Oriel Celtic chief coach Sean McCaffrey and assistant coaches Mickey Smyth, Marty Neeson and Ken Bardini. Oriel held this world class opposition to a 0-0 draw, against talented professional such as Andy van der Meyde, Robert-Jan Ravensbergen, Tim de Cler, Brutil Hosé (winner of Dutch Young Player Award in 1996) and Cedric van der Gun. Two Ajax players had already played first team football. Bob Smith a mutual friend of Sean McCaffrey reached out to Mick McCarthy to attend the match and meet the players, but due to a busy schedule could not make the event and passed on a message of support (in the official match programme). How this friendly match in Monaghan with AFC Ajax transpired leads back to the Oriel Celtic U16 team that won the Holland Cup in 1991 in Amsterdam. Co Adriaanse U16 team was beaten 3-2 by Spanish team Castledefells in the last 16 of the tournament, Oriel Celtic beat this Spanish side 5-2 in the quarter-finals. Co Adriaanse attended the quarter-final match and followed Oriel Celtic all the way in the competition. Co and Sean struck up a friendship and with Co now the Ajax Youth Development Officer in 1996, he turned the match into reality.[441][442][443][444][445][446][447]
