Oriental history is a scientific area to study about history in orient that has mainly developed in Japan. Oriental history means history about areas in North Africa, Eurasia except Europe and islands around them in Japan.
The notion about Oriental history was made between 1868 and 1945 in Japan. Japanese had studied history of Greater China and Korea under Tokugawa shogunate before 1868 but history to be studied was divided into Japanese history, Oriental history and western history when European-style high-educational institutions were newly established.
