Orion (?-2008), also known as El perro valiente[1], was a dog of a breed Rottweiller that during the night of 15 and 16 December on 1999, rescued 37 people[2] in the Vargas tragedy that occurred in the Litoral Varguense (Venezuela).
Rescue career[edit]
From early hours the dog barked nervous, because his instincts told him that a strong catastrophe was approaching, when a mudslide which forced him and his owner Mauricio Perez to leave his home and go to a safer place, it was when then the value of the animal was tested. The beginning of his achievements began when he went swimming in troubled waters. Some of the neighbors shouted at him to swim to the side where a girl isolated on firm ground was, he brought her to the shore, then he jump back and pulled out of the water the second girl of 14 years old, then helped eight children to climb to high places, so step on Wednesday night and part of Thursday morning until such witnesses accounted fact that "Orion" rescued 37 people from drowning from a small eight years up to 80 years old.
He spent Wednesday night and part of Thursday morning till witnesses of that tragedy, counted that "Orion" rescued 37 people from drowning, from a girl of 8 years old up to an eldery man of 80 years old.[3]
Awards[edit]
On February 26, 2000 at 10:00 am, the government held an official recognition in the lounge Andrés Eloy Blanco in the Palacio Municipal de Caracas (Venezuela), which recognized the noble and successful efforts of many volunteers, private companies, physicians, veterinarians, and members of the Venezuelan National Guard, Venezuelan Air Force, Venezuelan Army, Bolivarian Navy of Venezuela, City Hall of Baruta and neighborhood associations who participated in the rescue of pets affected by the natural disaster on Wednesday December 15, 1999 and especially to the canine Hero "Orion" because of saving lives.
He was awarded receiving the Medal "Honor The Value" and a certificate for the role played who expressed loyalty and nobility of him during the flood that ended with the lives of thousands of people in the Litoral Varguense. He also received plaques, medals by private institutions and government, tributes internationally and recognition by the Grand Lodge of Masonry in Venezuela.
Death[edit]
On December 1 of 2008, Orion died of an intestinal gastroenteritis.[4]
