Orlando Bravo (born 1970) is a Puerto Rican-American investor. He is a co-founder and managing partner of Thoma Bravo, LLC, a private equity investment firm which specializes in software and technology-enabled services sectors.[1]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Bravo was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.[2] His father, Orlando Bravo, was an entrepreneur who ran a family business. His mother, Artemis Bravo, is a first generation Puerto Rican, whose parents emigrated from Cuba.

Bravo pursued an early career in tennis, competing in national and international junior events.[2]

After graduating from high school in 1988, he left Puerto Rico to attend Brown University. He graduated from Brown in 1992 with a B.A. in economics and political science.[3]

Bravo later enrolled in graduate school at Stanford University where he graduated with a J.D. from Stanford Law School and an M.B.A. from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business in 1998.[4]

Career[edit]

Bravo began his professional career at Morgan Stanley & Co, where he worked in the firm’s Mergers and Acquisitions group based in New York. In 1998, after graduating from Stanford Law School and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, he joined Thoma Bravo’s predecessor firm, Thoma Cressey Equity Partners.[3]

In 2002, Bravo orchestrated the firm’s’s first software acquisition – the take-private of Prophet 21, Inc. Based on the success of this and other investments, Orlando was named a partner in 2001.[2]

In 2008, Orlando Bravo helped form Thoma Bravo, LLC. Since 2008, Bravo has overseen all aspects of Thoma Bravo’s investments, operations and strategy.[5]

Bravo currently sits on the board of directors of several Thoma Bravo companies including Qlik, Riverbed, SolarWinds, Hyland, LANDESK, TravelClick, SailPoint and Compuware.[6]

In 2008, Bravo co-founded Thoma Bravo alongside Carl Thoma, Lee Mitchell and Scott Crabill.

Thoma Bravo has been named one of top five technology buyout firms in the United States, with more than $17 billion in capital commitments across its funds.[7]

Thoma Bravo specializes in investments in application and infrastructure software and technology-enabled business services. Among Thoma Bravo’s current and past portfolio companies are Deltek, Blue Coat, Qlik and Solarwinds.

Since 2003, Thoma Bravo and its successor firms have acquired over 140 software and technology companies, representing nearly $30 billion in enterprise value.[8]

Philanthropy and Public Positions[edit]

Bravo’s main philanthropic initiatives include education, healthcare and immigration.[9] Through his endowment to Brown University, Bravo supports first generation college and Hispanic students. Bravo’s involvement in healthcare includes his faculty endowment at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.[10]

Bravo is on the board of the Border Youth Tennis Exchange (BYTE) whose mission is “to enhance the lives of children and young adults on the U.S./Mexican border through tennis, education and cross-border exchange”.[11]

Bravo also currently serves on Brown University’s President Council[12] and was formerly on the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors.[13]

Personal life[edit]

Bravo is married, has two children and resides in San Francisco, California.[2]
