The First XV have recently been promoted[4] to Yorkshire 2 league which is the eighth tier of the domestic competition organised and governed by the Rugby Football Union.

Club History[edit]

The origins of Ossett Rugby Union Football Club can be dated back to the 1890s, when the team succeeded in winning the Yorkshire Challenge Cup against Hebden Bridge with a final score of 13-3[5]. During this period, Charles Wimpenny was not only a prominent player for Ossett, but also held the role of team captain and earned his County Cap while representing Yorkshire six times.

Ossett finally experienced success in 1931 with a 6-0 victory over Keighlians (now known as Keighley RUFC) in the Yorkshire Challenge Shield final. However, their next season ended in disappointment as they were defeated by the Gloucestershire Regiment in the same tournament.

In 1939[6] Ossett RUFC played their final game at Queens Drive also known as Spring Mill at the time.

With the onset of World War II, rugby suffered a decline. There was a short period of activity in 1946 for Ossett, but it wasn't until 1979 that the Club was revived. This was all thanks to dedicated rugby supporters within the community who brought back the town's rugby legacy.

During the 1992-93 season, Ossett made it to the Final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy, making history as the first team to compete in all three Yorkshire Cup Finals. Despite facing defeat against Aireborough, they still held the impressive record of remaining undefeated in all League matches throughout the season.

In 2023, Ossett participated in the Papa John's Community Cup at the Championship Level for Counties 3 and below. Their campaign was a remarkable one, leading them to the Quarter Finals[7]. Unfortunately, in the final moments of the game, they were defeated by Hoylake with a score of 18-17[8]

In 2021 Ossett RUFC managed to take over the old Ossett Albion football pitch[9] at Queens Terrace. This is still currently shared with Ossett Albion Juniors. Externally the club now has a dedicated pitch and training pitch. The facilities also include a clubhouse, on-site changing and showering facilities as well as a dedicated bar.
