Etymology[edit]

Apak Mbit is believed to be the founder of Ossing. The exact date he founded the land is not recorded, but is generally believed to be around 1700 A.D. Apak Mbit in the Keaka language means “law breaker or break away”. He was an immigrant hunter from Central Ejagham. After one of his hunting expeditions, he decided to rest under a mango tree which in the local language is called “Nseng”. This area subsequently became his main hunting ground and home because of its fertile soil, good source of drinking water and streams harbouring much fish for his family and posterity. Having found a new home, Apak Mbit thought of giving it a name. He named it "Osseng" because there were numerous mango trees in the area. When the Europeans arrived the village, they called it Ossing

instead of Osseng.
