Ostinato Records is a record label based in New York City.[1] Their 2017 release Sweet as Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Historical Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018,[2] while their 2020 album The Dancing Devils of Djibouti was longlisted for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in the World Music Category.[3]
History
Ostinato Records was founded by Vik Sohonie, an Indian-born former journalist. Sohonie's international upbringing, being raised in Southeast Asia and the United States, and spending extended periods of time in Europe and Africa, inspired his love of international music and his understanding of music as a "gateway to other cultures".[1]
