Samantha Ouida Hyland (born February 15, 1993) mononymously known by her middle and stage name Ouida,[1] is an American singer-songwriter,[3][1] record producer[3] and activist[4] from San Francisco, California.[2][5] Her genre-bending music[6] incorporates details about the relationships and cultural experiences that shaped her, most notably of belonging, healing[3] and self-empowerment.

Early Life & Education[edit]

Ouida was born in San Francisco, California to a Filipina mother and Irish-American father.[7] She was raised in the Portola District where she began writing songs at 9 years old,[4] and grew up in a musical household.[4] Her father was a cantor in their church,[3] her sister played piano[4] and her brother the viola[4][3]

At 6, Ouida began playing piano on a secondhand piano and began to learn and sing Jazz standards with her paternal grandmother, also a singer,[4] who helped encourage inflections and pronunciation often heard in Jazz music.[4] Her paternal great-grandmother was a singer with the San Francisco Opera.[4] Ouida's earliest musical influences included Jazz and Rock,[4] with music from Jazz greats Billie Holiday,[1] Ella Fitzgerald[4] and Rock vocalist Janis Joplin[2] helping shape Ouida's singing style.[4]

Ouida began her own career in entertainment at the age of 9 years old, starring as the lead character Beatrice in the independent short film "Eyes of a Child", directed by Delphine Suter, that went to Cannes Film Festival,[8] won the Eastman Kodak Grand Jury Prize, and received first prizes in the White Sands International Film Festival and Reel Women's International Film Festival.[8] Ouida went on to model in print ads and commercials including an ad campaign for Puma alongside pro World Cup athletes on Fox and in Teen Vogue and Seventeen.[9]

Ouida attended a Catholic primary school when she began writing songs for her friends and her to sing[4] before graduating from the Jesuit high school Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco[9] where she performed in musicals, student showcases and plays. Ouida attended NYU's Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music before leaving due to financial constraints.[1][7] She returned to San Francisco where she majored in sociology at City College of San Francisco[1] before transferring and earning her degree in sociology from University of California, Berkeley.[6][3]

Career[edit]

Ouida began to make traction in her music career in 2020 during the first lockdown in Dublin, Ireland,[7][10] when Ouida wrote and produced Coffee (Ride With You),[10] described as a "jazzy, soulful jam about vulnerability, confrontation, and breakthroughs in relationships".[7] The song earned Ouida a title as one of NYLON's Rising Musicians,[11] with a soulful and hauntingly ethereal voice.[12]

The release gained international approval, with the single garnering multiple other features and broadcast rotations on California radio and Irish radio stations RTE 2FM and SPIN 1038.[5] Shortly after she released the music video for Coffee (Ride With You), directed by award-winning music video director David Dutton,[7] featuring an all-Filipinx cast and established Filipiniana fashion brands AMAMI and Vinta Gallery.[7]

Puerto Princesa was selected for the festival trailer for Center for Asian American Media's festival in 2022, dubbed "the world's leading showcase for new Asian American and Asian film, food, and music programs".[12]

Ouida released "Nice to Meet You" in April of 2022, which was reviewed as a reflection of Ouida's personal journey,[13] with her personality and original lyrics placing her at the front of creative writing.[13] The music video for "Nice to Meet You" directed by Alan Fisher, debuted in August 2022 and showcases cornerstones of Ouida's upbringing in the Portola District of San Francisco.[5][2] In an interview with Conversations About Her,[5] Ouida says the focus of the video are "the corners of those destinations where the locals' experiences happen – what it's like growing up here, being a part of this landscape as a city kid, and sort of telling my own story through that."[5]

Ouida was awarded the 2022 Balay Kreative grant to complete her debut EP for release in 2023.[14] She collaborated with rapper Ruby Ibarra[2][4] and JyellowL in 2022.[4]

Personal Life[edit]

She considers herself hapa, or a person of mixed heritage.[7] Racial identity plays a big role in Ouida's artistry and work.[7] She has spoken of the pressure of being boxed into certain demographics, the different parenting styles she was brought up with, and often feeling excluded[7] or isolated.[4] When she was 18, her music manager explicitly told her to keep her Asian heritage to herself,[7] because "Asians don't sell."[6] Her experiences prompted her to use her art as a space of visibility and community[3] to explore Filipinx identity in the diaspora and celebrate love for the heritage that connects people of the diaspora.[10] Ouida has become active in initiatives as a Diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant[4] and as an artist and activist creating visual art around positive and empowered representation of her Filipinx diasporic community.[10]
