Ouija (2014)[edit]
Ouija is a 2014 American supernatural horror film directed by Stiles White in his directorial debut, produced by Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Bradley Fuller, and Bennett Schneir and written by Juliet Snowden and White, who previously together wrote The Possession.[1] It stars Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Douglas Smith, and Bianca A. Santos as teenagers who have unleashed spirits from a Ouija board. Principal photography began mid December 2013 in Los Angeles wrapped at the end of January 2014.[2]
Ouija was released on October 24, 2014,[3] and grossed $103.6 million worldwide over a budget of $5 million.[4] The film was overwhelmingly criticized by critics, with many criticizing its inconsistent tone, characters and story.[5]
Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)[edit]
Ouija: Origin of Evil is a 2016 American supernatural horror film directed and edited by Mike Flanagan and written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard. The film is a prequel to the 2014 film Ouija and stars Elizabeth Reaser, Annalise Basso, and Henry Thomas. A widow and her family introduce a Ouija board into their phony seance business, thereby inviting a spirit that possesses the youngest daughter. The main cast was announced in September 2015[6][7][8] with principal photography beginning that same month, which ran to October 21, 2015.[9][10]
Ouija: Origin of Evil was released on October 21, 2016,[11] and grossed $81.7 million worldwide against a budget of $12 million.[12] The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising it as a significant improvement over its predecessor.[13]
Future[edit]
Prior to the release of Ouija: Origin of Evil in April 2016, in an interview with Bloody Disgusting, director Mike Flanagan spoke of the possibility of future installments done by various filmmakers. "It’d be kind of cool to see how the franchise does with new voices coming in for later installments. There’s just so many places you can go, narratively, with the board itself… it’s been around for 100 years, and the story possibilities are endless. It could be a real anthology franchise, with a different filmmaker helming each new entry. That could be lots of fun."[14][15]
Development[edit]
Ouija[edit]
The first installment was announced in May 2008 with Universal attached.[16] At one point in 2011 Universal dropped out due to budgetary concerns.[17][18] Following this it was subsequently announced that the film would be produced at a lower budget [19] and Universal rejoined the project.[20] Casting was announced in November and December 2013.[21][2][22][23] Principal photography began mid December 2013 in Los Angeles wrapped at the end of January 2014. Although shooting officially wrapped in January 2014,[2] poor test screenings resulted in re-shoots occurring in June,[24] which, according to Olivia Cooke, resulted in half the film being re-shot. With the reshoots, Lin Shaye was added to the film to play a newly written character, Erin Moriarty's character was removed from the film entirely, and new plot points were added or changed entirely. The most notable of changes included the character of Doris Zander's physical appearance changing from that of a burnt looking girl to a rotting, decomposing girl with stitches in her mouth.[25]
Ouija: Origin of Evil[edit]
Although the first film in the Ouija series was a success commercially, its critical reception was less than stellar. As a result, Jason Blum wanted to make a film that was significantly different than the original.[26] This appealed to director Mike Flanagan who stated in an interview that he has "allergy to sequels" Blum let Flanagan work on the type of horror film he wanted which was a period piece that dealt with a family dynamic.[26] There was some talk from the beginning about whether or not the film should have any connections at all to the original, but Flanagan himself was opposed to this, and instead opted to make references to the original subtle to welcome new viewers while also entertaining fans of the original.[27]
The 1980 movie The Changeling was an influence on the film. Flanagan screened the earlier film for his director of photography "like ten times". He watched such horror classics as The Exorcist and The Watcher in the Woods. It was then that the pair hit off the idea to film the movie as if it were made during the 1970s, using only technology that would only have been available at the time.[26]
Production in Los Angeles commenced in September 2015 and wrapped in October 2015. The main cast was announced in September 2015[6][7][8] with principal photography beginning that same month, which ran to October 21, 2015.[9][10] Post-production on the film began on October 31, 2015.
Universal Pictures used its 1963–90 logo, designed by Universal Title and Optical for MCA Inc., to open and promote the film.
