This untitled Star Wars trilogy is a series of epic space-opera films being developed by Rian Johnson. It will be produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The trilogy will be released at some point after 2022, following the four-year hiatus of Star Wars films that started after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. It will be separate from the three trilogies of the Skywalker saga, exploring new characters and areas of the Star Wars lore.
According to Johnson, the trilogy will "go someplace new, meet some new folks, tell a new story".
Background[edit]
On November 9, 2017, it was announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would write a new trilogy of Star Wars films, separate from the main story arc of previous films in the franchise, and would direct the first installment of his trilogy.[1] Johnson pitched the idea for the trilogy after his positive experience making The Last Jedi, which will "go someplace new, meet some new folks, tell a new story".[2]
