The Our Freedom (Bengali:আমাদের স্বাধীনতা Amader Swadhinota) is a sculpture and fountain in Barisal, Bangladesh, located north side of Bibir pukur on Sadar Road[note 4]. It was designed in 2007 by architect Md Habib Reza[1] for Barisal City Corporation (BCC).

Description

Historically, public fountains served multiple purposes: first, they were highly needed sources of water for neighbors in the centuries prior to home plumbing. Second, they were monuments of the patrons. But in Bangladesh, contemporary fountain-sculptures serve in different ways: in most cases water is the nature and sculpture represent an abstract theme. Renowned national fountain-sculptures of Bangladesh follow the same rules, such as SAARC Fountain.

The fountain was also designed on the same principle. Where the sculptural form is the abstract of people’s (our) freedom. The national flower is the country that faces continuous war between good and bad deeds (The black and white walls), which obstructs potential people (abstracted by the steel world) positive movements. People’s goal (freedom of positive activities) are represented by the void form of half sphere on the top of the obstructions (four wall-columns).

Background

The fountain-sculpture was designed as part of a project to redesign Bibir pukur, a 200 year old pond in Barisal city,[2] in 2007. As the pond located in the heart of Barisal city, Barisal City Corporation (BCC) undertook a development project for this pond and surroundings to give a better look to Sadar Road.[3]

In 2005, plans were launched to develop the visual look of Bibir pukur. Railing and pedestrian access of the southern and western side was done in the first phase during 2005. The development work of the northern and eastern side was included in the second phase of the project. During the construction of the second phase, controversy arose by the Sudhi Shamaj as according to the primary design (by the Engineering department of BCC) there was road widening on the northern side which would make the pond smaller. BCC accepted the idea and architect Md Habib Reza was advised to redesign these two sides with some beautification works; this fountain-sculpture was incorporated within the beautification work.

Design
