Chowk Shaheedan

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Chowk Shaheedan ("Martyrs' Square") (Urdu: ےہجصک وہمہھھرمغ) is the official name of a square in central Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan.[1]

It was named in memory of Maqbool Bhat, a Kashmiri freedom fighter and one of the founders of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).[2] Declared as a terrorist by India, he was sentenced to death for murder by the Delhi Supreme Court, and was hanged on 11 February 1984 at New Delhi.[3][2]

Maqbool Bhat (also commonly spelled as Maqbool Butt) hoisted the Kashmir Independence Flag in the square on his last public appearance before crossing the Line of Control (cease fire line) to Indian administered Kashmir.
