Outward Bound Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港外展訓練學校, abbv: OBHK) is set up in 1970 and one of the charters of Outward Bound International (OBI). OBHK is a registered non-profit organisation[1] at Tai Mong Tsai, Sai Kung, Hong Kong by the Late Sir David Akers-Jones which provides 50 years of experience in outdoor experiential education to the Hong Kong people. Its aim is to foster the personal development and social skills of participants by using challenging expeditions in the outdoors.

Outward Bound[edit]

History[edit]

OB's outdoor education courses are based on the principles adopted by German educator Kurt Hahn to train young British seamen to survive in the North Atlantic Ocean during the Second World War.

Belief[edit]

Outward Bound

Kurt Hahn, co-founder of Outward Bound

Philosophy[edit]

The Outward Bound philosophy is summarised by co-founder, Kurt Hahn,[2] as "The aim of education is to impel people into value-forming experiences, to ensure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an indefatigable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self, and above all, compassion." The development-by-challenge' approach combats the Six Declines of Modern Youth to produce positive psychological and social outcomes.[3] Outward Bound programmes are designed to empower people with self-awareness, responsibility, perseverance, interpersonal skills, confidence, compassion and the ability to create positive impact for the community.[4]

Outward Bound Hong Kong[edit]

OBHK's Vision[edit]

Resilient individuals. Effective communities. A stronger Hong Kong.

Origin[edit]

Outward Bound Hong Kong began in a chat over tea. In the coffee shop of the Hilton Hotel. Trevor Clark, who knew about Outward Bound in Africa, Captain Olaf Work, Manager of Holt's Wharf, with its strong connection with the founding of Outward Bound, and Sir David, who had met and talked to Kurt Hahn while teaching at Gordonstoun, and climbed Cader Idris with Outward Bound at Aberdovey and later helped to develop Outward Bound in Lumut, Malaya. The idea spread through the corridors of the Hongs culminating in a talk and reception in the lecture room of Shell in Shell House. Enthusiasm, supported by sound advice and help from so many and we had begun our voyage "Outward Bound".[5]

The Trust[edit]

The Outward Bound Trust of Hong Kong Limited has the valued members from whom the Executive Committee is elected, with The Late Sir David Aker-Jones as the Patron of the Trust.[6]
