Plastic collarplug according to DIN 49451, 380V, variant for 25A with guts placed beside it; with undamaged nose preventing reversed insertion
Wallplate from metal with plug inserted.

The oval collarplug according to DIN 49450 (wallplate) and 49451 (plug) is a triple-phase plug connection, used widely until 1975 in West-Germany and until 1990 in East-Germany as well as in the post-merger Germany. The norm was revoked on December 31st 1974 with any existing usage having to be taken out of circulation before December 31st 1980. [1] In the post-merger Germany they have to be removed from usage before December 31st, 1997.[2] They can still be found in use in some agricultural settings despite this.

The plug has four contacts; one for each of the three phases of the Three-phase_electric_power and one for the earth connection. Similar to the 4-pole CEE connector in IEC 60309 they have no connection for the neutral line and can therefore only be used for three-phase equipment. To prevent users from plugging the connector in in reverse, there is a "nose" on one side.

Dangers[edit]

In practice it happens that the "nose" wears or breaks off. If such a damaged plug is plugged in in reverse the earth connection is connected to one of the three phase-carrying wires. All parts of the device that normally would be connected to earth, like a metal housing, are then instead connected directly to the full power input. In case of a metal plug housing, the plug housing itself will also be live. Touching one of these pieces is very likely to lead to death by electrocution. Because of this, the oval collarplug is referred to as "builder-killer" and "widowmaker".

Variants[edit]

The plug connections were specified for 380V in variants for 25, 40, 63 and 100 A.
