Owen Bannigan (1962/1963 – 23 May 2014) was an Irish Fine Gael politician and beef and dairy farmer.
He was first elected to Monaghan County Council in June 1999 and was subsequently re-elected in 2004 and 2009.[1] He died suddenly while out canvassing on election day, 2014.[2][3] The election had to be cancelled as a result. All the ballots cast were officially destroyed.[4] He had been expected to top the poll.[5]
Bannigan was Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council between 2004 and 2005.[4]
He lived in Carrickatee. He had five children.[4] One of his sons plays football for the Monaghan Gaelic football team. Bannigan's death led to their match against Tyrone being postponed as a mark of respect.[5]
