P1nkstar is a cultural icon who has worked to break the stigma surrounding trans musicians. She grew up in a  conservative Catholic town about six hours south of Texas in Tampico, Mexico, which didn’t allow her to express her sexual identity to the fullest. Growing up, queerness was already frowned upon, so the concept of being transgender was outlandish in her community. She explored her identity as a queer teenager through the internet, where she grew lasting friendships with others. P1nkstar decided to move to Austin, Texas in 2014, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018 where she earned her Honors Bachelor’s degree in Queer Performance and Online Media. As a student studying Studio Art and Humanities with a great passion for conceptual artwork, she was allowed to begin to understand herself.

Early in her career:

P1nkstar developed her public image based on pop culture, the early 2000s, and her artistic development during her time at The University of Texas at Austin. She accredits the birth of her “p1nkstar” identity to her school project performing as a “digital pop star.” Her project got picked up by Co-Lab Projects, a local art organization that provides exhibition spaces for art students. She attended many exhibitions, galleries, and events before her graduation from the university in 2018. To put “P1nkstar” to an end, she had initially intended to have a party and perform at her final exhibition, but to her surprise, P1nkstar’s popularity among Austin’s queer community lead to her being booked for further events and parties. Despite her beginning in making music, p1nkstar explains that she has always been a musical child who “learned music growing up” ranging from playing the trumpet to singing. She stated that she had no prior experience producing music and “slapped some stuff together” to perform at the parties that she threw.

Current Life:

Through Co-Lab Projects, she went to different art openings across Austin, performing as an international pop star that was not well known initially. However, with more performances came more recognition. This newfound fame earned her an invite to be a dancer on stage at the Charlie XCX Concert at Emo’s in 2019. Beginning to push her boundaries of gender, P1nkstar began taking HRT in her twenties while identifying as gender non-conforming. From then on, she identified fully as a trans woman. The following year, P1nkstar published her EP Debut, Number 1 Hits! which was strictly created by members of the LGBQT+ community, expanding P1nkstar’s community beyond just her performances. In 2021, she went on to publish a “video experience” with Hotel Free TV called Girls Like Us. Through her art, she embraces the queer, femme qualities that she could not explore during her upbringing in Mexico.
