The Gay Alliance Ukraine (Ukrainian: Гей-альянс Україна) anglicized as GAU, is a Ukrainian public organization founded in 2009 that advocates for issues regarding LGBT rights in Ukraine[1]. The GAU is the largest LGBT organization in Ukraine, with 15 regional offices across the country and a headquarters located in Kyiv.[1] The GAU partners with various other national and international LGBT organizations.[1] The organization maintains a website, as well as a Facebook page and YouTube channel[2][3]. While the majority of The Gay Alliance Ukraine's content is published in Ukrainian, some content is also published or disseminated by the GAU in English and Russian.[4] Since the escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2022, GAU has been raising funds for food kits, temporary stay centers and private transport for internally displaced peoples in Ukraine.
Strategic Objectives[edit]
The Gay Alliance Ukraine outlines the following strategic objectives as goals for the movment.
- Improvement of the human rights situation for LGBT people on the part of the state and the general population of Ukraine and achievement of positive changes in attitude towards LGBT people[5]
- overcoming self-stigmatization and increasing self-esteem among representatives of the LGBT community[5]
- social adaptation of representatives of the LGBT community who found themselves in difficult life circumstances (FGD), or involved in sex work[5]
- the development of the Ukrainian LGBT movement[5]
- support for grassroots initiatives and the development of activism in the LGBT community[5]
- promoting gender equality in Ukrainian society; support and development of the female direction in the LGBT movement[5]
- promotion of sexual education of the Ukrainian population with the goal of preserving sexual and reproductive health in Ukrainian society[5]
- development of a democratic civil society[5]
- increase the competitiveness and potential of the organization.[5]
