PS Piemonte is a paddle steamer currently operating on Lake Maggiore.[lower-alpha 1] Piemonte was built by the Escher Wyss shipyard in Zurich, Switzerland in 1904. As of 2021, she is still in operation.[1]
Mechanical features[edit]
Piemonte is still equipped today with a double expansion steam engine type Compound sub horizontal, the boilers are two marine-type saturated steam generators with two fireboxes. Each marine type with smoke tubes in total 188 tubes per boiler. Construction of the company Ing. Bono, Milan 1972. Radiant surface is 84 square meters. Steam temperature: 190 degrees. Production 2 ton / h per generator. Feeding the boilers with treated and preheated lake water (50 degrees) 5700 liters per boiler at full capacity.
The thrust of the steamer is given by two paddle wheels, located laterally approximately on the ship's centerline. Each wheel measures about three meters in diameter, and is composed of nine adjustable blades with an eccentric system called a Caporale. Pushed with full force on each wheel, a load of about 1500 kg is exerted. The wheels are not separable however.
History[edit]
Piemonte was launched as the Regina Madre, and she entered service on 23 September 1904. She was renamed Piemonte in 1948, and was out of service for refurbishment between 1961-1965 and 1973-1974. These refurbishments included a new boiler.[2] However, after this she would see little use and was tied up in Arona. After a cruise in October 2001 she was given another refurbishment, and she returned to service in 2006.
Notes[edit]
- ↑ Piemonte is the only paddlesteamer operating in Italy despite operating in a lake bordered by two different countries (Switzerland and Italy).
