Pabitra Adhikary was a Bengali writer, poet, cartoonist, illustrator, and expert on the history of Bengali literature. He has been widely regarded as one of the foremost scholars on Bengali satire, parody, comedy, comical sketches, and the socio-cultural history of humor in the Bengali language.

Early life[edit]

Pabitra Adhikary was born in Harishankarpur in the Jhenaidaha district of erstwhile Jessore, then in the undivided Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) on 21 December 1935. He later moved to Kolkata and attended Calcutta University.

Literary career[edit]

Adhikary specialized in Bengali satire, with a special interest in the history of sketch humor, parody, and comedy. His greatest scholarly contribution is the three-volume encyclopedic trilogy on Bengali satire. Volume 1, titled Tinso Bochhorer Bangla Bangya Kabita (300 Years of Satire in Bengali poetry), deals with the history of humor, comical elements, and satire in Bengali prose. Volume 2, titled Tinso Bochhorer Bangla Parody (300 Years of Bengali parody), deals with the genesis, evolution, and cultural significance of parody as a literary device in Bengali literature. Volume 3, titled Tinso Bochhorer Bangla Bangya Naksha (300 Years of Bengali sketch comedy), chronicles the literary and linguistic history of humor sketches, comedic skits, and comic vignettes in the Bengali language. These three volumes together are considered to be one of the most important scholarly works of its kind in Bengali.[1]

Adhikary's other important works include Banga Sahitye Ranga-bangya (Humor in Bengali literature), a comprehensive scholarly account of the cultural, economic, linguistic, political, and social history of humor in Bengali. This treatise also includes highly detailed biographical information and timelines covering all major writers, publications, and literary milestones over a course of three centuries since the establishment of modern-day Calcutta as a commercial and financial power center.

He was a long-time editor of Ranga - Bangya - Rasikesu, the preeminent journal of Bengali humor that has featured over the years every single major literary figure of the contemporary era, including and beyond the niche genres of comedy and satire. He has authored numerous other books on poetry, juvenile literature, as well as anthologies. He also edited Nairit, an alt-progressive magazine known for its unorthodox offerings and neo-traditional stance.
