Padre Mu is a recreational and medical cannabis delivery and distribution service[1] based in Oakland, California.[2]

History[edit]

Padre Mu was established in 2018 by author, illustrator and Zen teacher, Mel Ash.[3][4] The company was founded as a part of the City of Oakland’s Cannabis Equity Program.[2] While studying to become a teacher of Zen Buddhism Mel Ash was given the Buddhist name “Mu,” meaning “nothingness” and Latino friends began calling him “Padre” in recognition of his unofficial role giving spiritual advice leading to the creation of the nickname “Padre Mu”.[4]

Cannabis Equity[edit]

Padre Mu started as a participant in the City of Oakland’s Cannabis Equity Program in California, United States.[2][5] “In order to qualify, new business owners would have to meet two of three criteria: make below 80% of the city’s median income, live in a high crime neighborhood in Oakland for a decade, or have been convicted of a marijuana related crime. The idea was to remove some obstacles to help get them started, by waiving inspection fees, giving loans and providing rent-free space.”[2] Padre Mu has also been engaged in social equity initiatives[6] such as Eaze’s Momentum Advisory Board[7] and fundraising for criminal expungement.[8]

Compassion[edit]

Following in the tradition of Proposition 215 and with the establishment of California Senate Bill No. 34, the Dennis Peron and Brownie Mary Compassionate Care Act, Padre Mu began supporting Sweetleaf Collective to distribute and deliver donations of free medical cannabis products to low income terminally ill patients throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.[9][10]
