Dr. P. Jagannath (commonly known as Dr. J) is an Indian surgical oncologist who specialises in gastrointestinal cancer surgery and the treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) malignancies. He serves as the Chairman of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre and is the Chief of Surgical Oncology at S. L. Raheja Hospital in Mumbai.[1][2]
Overview
Dr. J specialises in cancer surgery and the treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary malignancies. He is credited with developing HPB surgery as a formal surgical specialty in India in 1985.[3]
He has participated in public health initiatives and medical events, including the NDTV-Fortis Cancerthon, where he provided guidance on cancer diagnosis and care.[4]
Following the medical treatment of former Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for pancreatic cancer, Dr. J was cited in national media providing analysis on the clinical challenges associated with the disease and its surgical management.[5]
In 2012, Dr. J became the first Indian elected President of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA).
Early life and education
Dr. J was born on 13 January 1956 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He graduated from Kurnool Medical College, Sri Venkateswara University, in 1978 with an MBBS degree, receiving ten gold medals.[6] He completed a Master of Surgery (MS) in General Surgery at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), University of Madras, in 1982.[6]
Medical career
Dr. J joined Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai in 1982, serving for nearly twenty years and ultimately holding the positions of Professor of Surgical Oncology and Chief of Gastrointestinal Services.[6] Since 2002, Dr. J has led the surgical oncology departments at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre and S.L. Raheja Hospital.[1][2]
Honours and achievements
Dr. J founded the Indian Chapter of the IHPBA in 2000, serving as its founding secretary and later as president (2007–2009).[6] In 2012, Dr. J became the first Indian to serve as President of the Asia-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association; he led the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association as President through 2018.[6]
In 2020, the IHPBA awarded Dr. J its Distinguished Service Medal, the association's highest honour.[3] He also received the Swastha Bharat Samman in 2013, presented by the Union Health Minister of India for contributions to oncology.[7]
Philanthropy
Dr. J founded the Crusade Against Cancer Foundation (CACF), a charitable trust registered in Mumbai that provides financial assistance to children with cancer in India.[8] The foundation was formally launched by Amitabh Bachchan in July 2001.[9][10] In 2010, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar supported the foundation's fundraising campaign, which raised over ₹10 million for cancer treatment and awareness initiatives.[11]
As part of the CACF, Dr. J launched (theindiacancer.org), a non-profit online portal. This community initiative includes information on cancer detection, common myths, treatment and care, as well as a directory of support groups and a search facility for cancer treatment centres across India. The non-profit also renders financial and medical assistance to children with cancer.[10] [8]
