Panchmukhi Hanuman
The Son of deity Vayu (wind), the lord Hanuman, the ardent devotee and messenger of Lord Shri Rama, has many forms. One of the highly revered forms is the Panchmukhi Hanuman.[1][2], this avatar is considered to be one of his extremely powerful forms.
Lord Hanuman's panchamukha (Five-Faced) avatar is said to represent all five directions. His five faces are considered to represent East, West, North, South and Upper directions[3].
Lord Hanuman's Eastern face is that of a monkey, which is said to have the brightness of a thousand suns.
In the Hindu scripture Ramayana, it is clearly written that this is the same monkey form which Hanuman was in his childhood. Considering the sun hidden behind a mango tree as a fruit, and with a strong desire to eat it, Hanuman flew into space with his divine power. Almost, Pawanputra Hanuman consumed the sun[4][5] thinking it to be a red fruit.
Five Faces Manifestations
The five majestic faces[6] are one form of Hanuman. The five majestic faces, each belonging to a different god.
- Lord Shri Hanuman: His face is towards east. Hanuman considered as an avatar of Lord Shri Shiva[7]
- Lord Shri Narasimha: The fourth incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu, this lion form faces south.
- Lord Shri Garuda: Facing west, Garuda, or the eagle, the vehicle of Lord Shri Vishnu, is a part of the Panchmukhi Hanuman form.
- Lord Shri Varaha: is the third incarnation of Shri Vishnu among the Dashavatara. Adivaraha is a manifestation of Lord Shri Vishnu.
- Lord Shri Hayagriva: An incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu with a human body and the face of a horse looking upward.
Hand held weapons
Lord Panchmukhi Hanuman is grand and awe-inspiring. This form originated in the underworld when Vayu putra Hanuman was entrusted with the responsibility of saving the life of Lord Rama. This form is endowed with many weapons like Parashu (battle axe of Parshuram), Sudarshan chakra (divine disk of Vishnu), Gada (mace), Trishul (trident) and Khanda (sword), Divine Kalash, hand knife, Shield and Kamandalu (Water flask).
Manifestation as panchmukhi Avatar
According to the Ramayana, during the Ramayana war, a losing Ravana, the king of demons, summoned one of his brothers, Ahiravan, the chief of Patala Loka. He, disguising himself as Vibhishana (one of Ravana’s younger brothers who was a companion of Shri Ram in the war against Ravana), with deceitful Ahiravana threw Hanuman off-guard and made Shri Ram and Lakshman unconscious[8] with his magical attribution and then kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshmana, and taken them to the paatal loka (underworld).
Ahiravana's soul rested in five firing deepak candles[9][10]. When Hanuman went to Patala Loka, he learned that the only way he could kill Ahiravana was to extinguish all five fires (deepak) at the same time.
That is when Hanuman manifested his panchamukhi manifestation, each form facing a different direction. Together, they blew out the deepak and brought the still-unconscious Lord Rama and Lakshmana back to Lanka.
Hanuman is often referred to as a yogi.[11] He is believed to have reached perfection in his siddhis and had gained control over his five senses (Pancha Indriyas). So because of that he got the name Jitendriya[12]. A term 'Jitendra' derived from Sanskrit, which means one who conquers all the senses.
