Paper Garden Records, generally known as Paper Garden, is an American independent record label founded by Bryan Vaughan in 2005 in Nashville, Tennessee and currently based in Downtown Brooklyn in Brooklyn, New York.[1][2] Currently run by Bryan Vaughan, the current roster includes ARMS, David Thomas Broughton, Eli Mardock, Emanuel and the Fear, and Little Tybee among others.[3]

History[edit]

Paper Garden Records was formed in July 2005 in Nashville, Tennessee by Bryan Michael Vaughan as part of an entrepreneurship program at Belmont University.[4]

Paper Garden's first signing was Eagle*Seagull, an American indie rock band from Lincoln, Nebraska.[5] Eagle*Seagull gained considerable attention in the independent music scene following the release of their debut self-titled album. Paper Garden Records subsequently signed Peasant, Darla Farmer, Emanuel and the Fear, Mighty Tiger, The City and Horses, Dad Rocks!, Pree, Conveyor, Fierce Creatures, Team Genius and Little Tybee.[3][6]

In 2014, Paper Garden moved its office to Downtown Brooklyn.[2]

On January 10, 2016, Paper Garden Records announced that it had signed with Sub Pop Licensing,[7] the licensing division of Sub Pop Records. Other labels currently signed to Sub Pop Licensing include Sub Pop, Ghostly International, Hardly Art, Misra Records, Suicide Squeeze Records, and Third Man Records.[8] Sub Pop Licensing has licensed music for and secured placements in countless films and television shows.[8]

Events[edit]

SXSW[edit]

Each year, Paper Garden Records partners with various promoters and brands to help curate acts and performances in the form of residencies at the annual SXSW Music & Film Festival in Austin, Texas.[9] Paper Garden has previously partnered with promoters and brands such as Pigeons & Planes, My Old Kentucky Blog, and The Wild Honey Pie to showcase established and up-and-coming musical acts.[10]

Paper Garden Radio[edit]

Paper Garden Records currently runs the radio show Paper Garden Radio.[11] The show started in 2015 and airs every Sunday from 4-6pm on Little Water Radio, a free form music station based in South Street Seaport, Manhattan, New York.[12] Paper Garden also frequently co-curates the station's interviews, live performances, and record release previews.[12] The show is currently hosted by the label's founder, president and Chief Executive Officer Bryan Vaughan, the label's creative director and Chief Marketing Officer Heidi Vaughan Greenwood, and the label's Director of A&R Caleb Olson.[1][11][13][14]
