Skeletal Lightning is an American independent record label based in Urbana, Illinois.
History[edit]
Skeletal Lightning started out as a music blog in February 2012, featuring coverage, features, and interviews of prominent bands and figures from the midwestern DIY scene.[1] On July 22, 2012, Skeletal Lightning released a digital complication of previously unreleased demos, recordings, and new songs from 26 bands, many of which would go on to release music with the label.[2]
Skeletal Lightning was named after a lyric from The Blood Brothers' song “Camouflage, Camouflage.”[3]
Inspired by a record assembly project during an internship at Polyvinyl Record Co., Skeletal Lightning co-owner Sean Hermann decided to take the blog a step further and begin releasing music in physical formats.
The official Skeletal Lightning store would launch in October, 2012, featuring a cassette release of New Jersey band Tawny Peaks' self-titled debut album, with releases from Kittyhawk and Aviator to follow.
Hermann's wife Mo would officially join the label as a co-owner in 2017.[4]
As of September 2019, the label has released nearly 90 titles from over 40 different artists all around the world, including releases from The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Rozwell Kid, Pool Kids, Vasudeva, William Bonney, Gillian Carter, and more.
Skeletal Lightning Fest[edit]
In April, 2013, Skeletal Lightning threw its first Fest, headlined by Into It. Over It. and Native, and featuring up and coming bands at the time such as Tiny Moving Parts and Foxing, highlighting the best of the midwestern DIY scene over two days in Urbana, Illinois
The fest made its return in April 2014, featuring over 40 bands over three days, including performances from Weekend Nachos, Thou, Circle Takes The Square, Tenement, Foxing, and more.
