Party for Animal Welfare (Ireland)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Party for Animal Welfare (PAW) is an unregistered[1] political party in Ireland campaigning for animal rights and welfare.[2]

The party's first event was a protest against the Bunratty fox hunt in January 2019,[3] and it later held a media launch in Dublin on 26 February 2019.[2] In March 2019, the group announced its intention to run its first election candidates in the 2019 Irish local elections and the 2019 European Parliament election in Ireland, both due to be held on 24 May 2019.[2][3] By early May 2019, its website stated that it would not be running any candidates in either election,[4] but that its members "look forward to the General Elections in 2021".[4]

According to the group, one of the impetuses for its foundation was the perceived lack of attention on animal welfare issues from other parties.[3] Gerben Uunk, one of the founders of the party, described other political parties as giving lip service to animal welfare issues in their manifestos but then doing little or nothing once actually in power.[3]

Policies of the party include closing down puppy farms,[2] banning all blood sports,[2] banning national hunt racing,[3] banning animals being sold on the internet,[3] opposition to government subsidies for greyhound racing in Ireland,[3] and opposition to live export of animals.[2]

According to Gerben Uunk, the party does not aim to gain power itself but instead hopes to influence other parties through its policies.[2] On the party website, it claims to be a 'true grassroots decentralized organisation unlike most other parties in Ireland'.[5]
