Passive electronic lock
Passive electronic lock

The "passive" in passive electronic locks means no power supply (or battery). Its appearance is similar to a mechanical lock. Like Electronic deadbolts, it is a direct substitute for mechanical locks. But the difference is that passive electronic locks do not require wiring and are easy to install.[1]

Features[edit]

High controllability, high security, and accountability.

System components[edit]

The system consists of three parts: passive electronic lock, electronic key and software.[2]

Principle[edit]

The passive electronic lock integrates a miniature electronic single-chip microcomputer. There is no mechanical keyhole, only three metal contacts. When unlocking, the user inserts the electronic key into the keyhole of the lock, which places the three contacts on the head end of the key are in contact with the three contacts on the lock.[3] The key, which contains an electric battery, supplies power to the lock, and reads the ID number of the passive electronic lock for verification. When verification is passed, the key powers the coil in the lock. The coil generates a magnetic field and drives the magnet in the lock to unlock. Turning the key drives the mechanical structure in the lock to unlock the lock body. After successful unlocking, the key records the ID number of the lock and also records the time of opening the lock.[4] Passive electronic locks can only be unlocked by a key with unlocking authority, and unlocking will fail if there is no unlocking authority.
