Paul Faraci

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Paul Faraci (died February 6, 2018) was an entrepreneur who modified a traditional cheese-filled Italian turnovers such as calzone or panzerotti, and created a snack staple in Canada that delivers a hand-held calzone, and supplies a quick pizza 'fix.'[1]

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Faraci owned the St. Vital and Fort Garry driving schools and later owned restaurants in the 1960s that sold burgers and other items.[2] Faraci was acknowledged as creating Pizza Pops, originally a pizza-filled pocket of deep-fried dough, in 1964.[3]

The creation was such a success that Faraci left his restaurant business in order to manufacture Pizza Pops, took in business partners, and introduced the product into grocery stores.

Faraci said he broke with his partners because he wanted to market a bigger range of flavours, but they demurred. The partners sold the business to Pillsbury. Pizza Pops are currently manufactured by General Mills at a factory in Winnipeg. Faraci's customers of his original recipe claim the modern version, heated in an oven or microwave, is more doughy and bland than his creation.[3]

In time, other versions of the calzone joined the market: Pizza Pockets, Hot Pockets, etc.[4]

Faraci died in Vernon, British Columbia at the age of 89 according to his family.[5]
