Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Caine was born in Charlestown, Indiana, in 1891. He attended public school in Greencastle, Indiana.[2]

Founding of Kappa Alpha Psi[edit]

After high school, Caine enrolled at Indiana University.[2] He worked in Greek letter houses as a cook and housekeeper, befriending many with his gregarious demeanor.[2] Through these friendships, he learned information that helped contribute to the founding of the fraternity of Kappa Alpha Psi on January 5, 1911.[2] Caine never finished his sophomore year due to a fire at the fraternity house in which he worked.[2] However, he remained active in the fraternity, helping to establish the Gamma, Delta, and Zeta chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi.[1]

Later life[edit]

Caine focused on developing his catering career, establishing his own catering services in Gary, Indiana and Peoria, Illinois.[1] He also wrote a book on catering, published by the Hurst Publishing Company in 1919.[1] Three years later at his catering business, an explosion of gaseous materials occurred, burning Caine severely.[1] He later went into business in Rockford, Illinois and was burned during an explosion of gaseous materials in his dry cleaning business in 1922. He died April 15, 1922 at St. Anthony's Hospital due to pneumonia and shock following 1st and 2nd degree burns.[1]
