Paul Yaml is an American Technology culture hero. Portrayed as a non-fictional current, or previous, employee of a real company, his seemingly plausible exploits share elements of both folklore and Tall tales while taking place in a modern technological era. He is unseen character whose past casual acts are the, often surprising, behind-the-scenes reason for current company policies or traditions. This is on example of cultural meme that has not made the transition into an internet meme.

These types of emerging stories were meant to entertain, explain, and introduce new ideas into the workplace. Early stories referred to the character only as Paul, but sometime after the creation of the YAML file format, in 2001, the character began to adopt his present day full name.
