Pearl Kgomotso Kupe

Pearl Kgomotso Kupe is an Attorney,[1] Activist,[2][3] International Consultant, Author and Minister of the Gospel.

Being a multi disciplinarian, she is known for her active involvement in Labour law and legal matters, Social development,[4] Transformational leadership, Transformative Education and Gender Reconciliation [5][6] in various countries across the globe. Her approach is focused on problem solving, educating and engaging the community and members of society to take responsibility.

She is the Founding President and current COO of Hebrew Midwives Ministry and Servant leader of Kingdom Mandate Assembly and Kingdom Chamber of Commerce in Africa.[7]

She is the only daughter of Elliott Tendani Kupe and Dr. (Prof) Serara Selelo Kupe Mogwe.[8] Her mother, Prof Serara Selelo Kupe Mogwe was the first woman in Botswana to earn a Doctorate degree (Columbia University, New York, USA) and to earn full professorial status at the University of Botswana.[9]

Pearl Kupe first attended primary school at Brooklane Primary School in Ottawa, Canada where her family had moved to after her father was sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency to attend university there. She later finished her primary education at Thornhill school in Gaborone, Botswana after moving to Botswana with her family.

Kupe began her secondary education at Maru A Pula Secondary School in Gaborone, Botswana. She completed her secondary studies at a college prep school Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH) School in Northfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1979 where she graduated with honors.[10]

From 1981 to 1986, she attended the University of Botswana and Edinburgh University, Scotland where she attained a Bachelor of Laws, LLB degree (in conjunction with Edinburgh University).[11] Later, from the years 2000 to 2001 she furthered her studies at the University of Cape Town, receiving a Masters of Law, LLM with distinction in Advanced Labour Law.[12][13] She then attained a postgraduate diploma, with distinction, in Dispute Resolution over the years 2001 to 2002 and was also certified by the University of California, Berkeley, USA as a Business coach in 2007.[14]

Career[edit]

1986 - 2001[edit]

Kupe began her working career in 1986 in Gaborone, at the Attorney General Chambers, Legislative Drafting division and later moved to the Prosecutions Division. During her tenure, she served as Senior State and Principal State Counsel.[15] In August 1997, Kupe was appointed as the first ever Registrar of the Industrial (Labour) Court of Botswana.[16]

From October 1997 to September 2001 Kupe served as the Registrar of the Labour Court of Botswana.[17]

2001-2006[edit]

In September 2001 Pearl Kupe moved to Pretoria, South Africa where she worked with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) (ILO/Swiss Project). She initially functioned as the Programme Coordinator from October 2001 to June 2003, and subsequently as a Social Dialogue Specialist from July 2003 to December 2005. Her mandate at ILO was to advance and promote labour peace in eight of the South African Development Community (SADC) nations. These countries include Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.[18]

In January 2006, Kupe left ILO and began working as Corporate Executive for Transnet Ltd; the largest transport and Logistics Company in South Africa.[19] During her six-year stint with the company, Kupe served in a number of positions; she was a Business Coach in Transnet’s Re-engineering department, Acting General Manager (Safety) for Transnet FreightRail, General Manager (Human Resources and Organisational Development) in Transnet’s Capital Projects and General Manager (Communications and BBBEE & Transformation).[20]

2011 - Present[edit]

In July 2011 Kupe left formal employment in the corporate world to work as a global consultant to national governments and international organizations. Her regular assignments include:

  • Consultant and Advisor to the ‘Princess Taghrida Institute’ (PTI) in Jordan for women empowerment initiatives[21]
  • Consultant to the Ministry of Labour in the Kingdom of Swaziland on labour law matters
  • Director of the Africa Women Leadership ‘Africa Board’ and ‘Africa Lead’ programmes[22]
  • African representative of the ‘East, West and Africa Women’s Forum’ (EWA)[23]
  • Consultant to Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC), for their Women in Law enforcement and Women in Leadership, Women in Politics and Pioneering Women programmes.
  • Honorary Executive Committee member of the African Women Leaders Forum[24][25]

She also serves on a number of international Boards; these include Amrop Landelahni, and LBOM amongst others. In addition to this, she is and has been active on a number of national, regional and continental taskforces and advisory committees, such as:

  • Ministry of Labour & Home Affairs Productivity Committee (Botswana)
  • Task Force on Productivity Reward/ Recognition System- Chairperson (Botswana)
  • Emang Basadi Women’s Organisation
  • Botswana National Council of Women, Highest advisory body to the Government on Gender issues
  • Secretariat, South African MLC, Millennium Labour Council; Bipartite consultative forum under the ILO/SWISS PROJECT, ILO Pretoria Office
  • Secretariat, Tripartite Taskforce Forums for Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique,
  • Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, ILO/SWISS PROJECT, ILO Pretoria Office
  • Love Botswana Outreach Mission [26]

In addition to being an author and international consultant, she has lectured LLM students at various Universities in South Africa such as the University of Pretoria, University of Port Elizabeth and the University of Cape Town in Labour Law. She also lectured on Mercantile Law at the Botswana Institute of Accountants.

Ministry[edit]

She is currently the IMF (International Ministers Fellowship) International Director of Community Engagement and Social Action also sits on the IMF Global Executive Council. In addition, she is the CEO of WE CARE International; an organisation that drives community engagement and social action projects all over the world. Kupe sits on many other ministry boards and is a frequent contributor to JOY Christian Magazine.[27][28]

She speaks regularly on various South African based radio stations such as: Radio Pulpit, Radio Impact, Rainbow Radio, Radio 2000, Radio Metro, Lighthouse Radio Broadcast,Radio Dexterity and AWE Radio station based in Florida, USA. She also works and partners with numerous Apostolic and Prophetic international ministries.

In addition to her radio contributions, she makes frequent television appearances on South African based TV channels.[29] These include: ‘One Gospel’ TV programme and the [[South African Broadcasting Corporation]] (SABC channels)[30] (Shift programme and Noeleen, amongst others), as well as on TOP TV’ channels. She is the former host of her own Christian talk show entitled “The Rev” and also hosted “ED”, an educational programme created for the South African DSTV channel.

Aside from her media presence, Kupe oversees the running of the Kingdom Mandate Assembly (KMA), KMA-GSoM (The Kingdom Mandate Assembly Branch of the Global School of Ministry) in South Africa. She is the Servant Leader of the following ministries: Hebrew Midwives Ministry and the Kingdom Chamber of Commerce in Africa.[31][32]

Public speaking[edit]

Kupe is also a renowned public speaker. She has spoken at a number of global conferences on various topics. These include: matters pertaining to the African continent,[33] Transformational leadership,[34] social dialogue and labour law, as well as legal issues, communication matters, transformative education matters and gender issues.[35] One such example is her presentation at the Transformative Education Forum on Women & their role in the Transformative education process in Bangalore, India in 2012. Other examples include her presentation on “Human Rights, International Law and the Family” which was held on December 8, 2012 at the Jamaica Conference center in Kingston and her presentations at the GILPP, Geneva Institute of Leadership and Public Policy in from 2012-2015 on Good governance issues, Social Dialogue, “Human Rights or Human Wrongs” and on “Keys to National Transformation” using Botswana as a Case study.

International Forums[edit]

Kupe is involved in a number of International forums that promote responsible and transformational leadership. She is the Africa Representative for the East, Wes. And Africa Forum (EWA);[36] a forum initiated by Princess Taghrid of Jordan made up of women leaders from all over the world. She is also a facilitator and regular speaker at the Geneva Institute of Leadership and Public Policy (GILPP); an Institute in Geneva that annually trains world leaders in the areas of leadership, governance and public policy. Kupe works with the GILPP Institute on a voluntary basis as a Facilitator and has been appointed a GILPP Senior Fellow.

She also sits on the honorary Executive Committee for the Africa Women Leaders Forum;[37] a forum bed in Brussels, Belgium for African women Presidents, Vice Presidents, First Ladies, Government leaders and Heads of international organisations. It is chaired by the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Vice Chaired by Rev. Jesse Jackson from the USA.[38]

Awards[edit]

In 2013, Kupe received the “Women in Ministry” award. In the same year she was granted the “SMI Extraordinary Women” award which is granted to women who have contributed to nations and society at large.

In the following year, the “Pioneering Women of Southern Africa” Award was granted to her for “women who were Pioneers and trailblazers and for being the First appointed Registrar of the Industrial Court in Botswana”. On December 3, 2016 in Harare, Zimbabwe Kupe was awarded the “Africa Women’s Association Living Legacy” Award, for her contribution to the continent of Africa in the area of Business and Enterprise.[40] [41][42]
