Pecanwood College, also known as PWC, is a private, English-medium co-educational day and boarding primary and high school situated near the Pecanwood Estate and Country Club in Hartbeespoort, North West Province, South Africa.
The school is part of the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa and writes the Independent Examinations Board examinations.
Pecanwood College is part of the AdvTech Group, which runs alongside several other established educational brands such as Pinnacle Colleges, Trinityhouse schools, Crawford International, Abbotts High Schools and Maragon Schools.[1]
History
Petro Geerdts envisioned a community-focused private school overlooking the Hartbeespoort Dam and Magaliesberg Mountains.[2]Working with the Van der Byl brothers of Irene, an old rundown farmhouse was renovated to serve as the initial school building.[3] Centurus (Pty) Ltd worked to build and operate this school, Pecanwood College would be the first of three schools in a family of schools known as the Centurus Colleges, the education subsidiary of Centurus (Pty) Ltd, alongside Tyger Valley College in Pretoria and Southdowns College in Centurion.[4]
The school opened in January 2005 with 54 students with 6 teachers, a secretary and director of Centurus Colleges Chris Lee, the former executive headmaster of Cornwall Hill College[5], with no uniform but a white golf shirt with the PWC logo emblazoned on it.
The preparatory school and high school buildings opened in 2006. Four quads in the campus are the Livingston quad, the Mandela quad, the Science quad and the peace garden in memory of Petro Geerdts. The swimming pool, tennis courts and rugby field were later built. The rugby field was donated to by a past headboys parents.
The preschool was opened in 2009. The construction of the hostel started in 2011 and the first boarders arrived in 2012 and the building is known as the Founders Hostel, which was a co-educational hostel of 35 people until the boys hostel opened in 2013.
In 2013 the school hall opened and named after Mike Farrer who was PWCs first founding high school head and senior head, the building is known as Farrer Hall.
In 2015, Centurus Colleges were bought AdvTech, Africa's largest educational company and continued to operate alongside other AdvTech brands.[6]
In 2021, renovations of the high school entrance, the construction of a new "learn-to-swim" pool, new preparatory school, and upgrades of the hostel dormitories were completed by Paragon Architects.[7]
Under a corporate portfolio simplification,[8] the Centurus Colleges brand is being dissolved by AdvTech. Starting 1 January 2027, Pecanwood College is officially joining the Pinnacle Colleges brand[9] and becoming Pinnacle College Pecanwood. This rebrand will include the changing of the logo, uniform and school colours to establish the Pinnacle College brand. The other Centurus Colleges, Tyger Valley College and Southdowns College, will also be rebranded to unify AdvTech's branding and administration. With Tyger Valley College becoming Trinityhouse Tyger Valley[10] and Southdowns College becoming Crawford International Southdowns.[11]
