Peninsula Business Services, branded as Peninsula since 2016,[1] is a multinational company that provides business support – such as human resources, employment law, health & safety and employee well being services – to employers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

History[edit]

Peninsula was founded in 1983, by Peter Done, who is the owner and group managing director.[2] The company is based at the Peninsula Building in Manchester and employs 759 people.[3] Peter Done is also the co founder, with his brother Fred Done, of the high street betting chain Betfred.[2]

Peninsula was started as a result of Betfred having to pay out £11,000 at an employment tribunal, due to what the Done brothers perceived to be a lack of legal support.[3] In December 2015, Peninsula bought Croner Group from Wolters Kluwer to increase its reach in the corporate and software sectors.[4]

In May 2012, Peninsula acquired a 65% share of Employsure, an Australian advising firm specializing in industrial relations,[5] which was registered as a company in 2011,[6] Employsure, which claims to be the largest in its sector with over 20,000 clients in Australia and 800 employees,[7] has also been the subject of a number of legal controversies in Australia, including a prosecution by the ACCC for a breach of the Australian Consumer Law.[8][9] In 2015 the company was found to have unfairly dismissed one of its employees,[10][11] and in 2017 lost a lawsuit with a customer attempting to enforce a lock-in contract.[12] On July 2017, the Fair Work Ombudsman released a statement regarding complaints from members of the public claiming to have been misled by the web address "www.fairworkhelp.com.au" owned and operated by Employsure. The Fair Work Ombudsman stated that it is not affiliated with any commercial providers of advisory or workplace relations, and that it provides tools, advice and services to employers, employees and members of the public free of charge.[13][14] The 2018 ACCC prosecution alleged misleading and deceptive conduct,[8] specifically that Employsure had targeted small businesses who were seeking the free workplace relations helpline operated by the Government. According to the prosecution, its primary objective was to sign these businesses up to long-term contracts with on-going fees. The ACCC also alleged that Employsure engaged in unconscionable conduct towards four small businesses between August 2015 and June 2018.[9]

In October 2017, Peninsula's Croner Group subsidiary acquired Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory, including CCH Information.[15] In October 2017, Peninsula announced a sponsorship deal with Salford City F.C, with the newly named Peninsula Stadium being unveiled by Sir Alex Ferguson.[16]
