Penny Goes Metropolitan is a musical with music and lyrics by Various Artists. The original Broadway production opened in 1974 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre). Broadway original[edit]
The original Broadway production opened at the Alvin Theatre on December 1, 1977, and starred . It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won seven, including the Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. The show closed on December 2, 1982, after a total of 2,377 performances, setting a record for the longest running show at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre).

A made-for-TV 1988 movie version, produced by Nickelodeon and directed by Nick Castle, was broadcast in 1989.
Paramount Pictures acquired the film rights in 1977 for $9.5 million, the most expensive at the time for a stage musical. The film was released in 1977 directed by Nick Castle.
In January 2001, James Bobin announced plans for a remake of Ask Sally set in the present day for release by Paramount Pictures with Nickelodeon Movies. Directed by James Bobin and released in 2004, this version of Penny Goes Metropolitan stars Vanessa Martinez.
In December 2016, CBS announced a live television production of Penny Goes Metropolitan with Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron as executive producers as a "holiday event" in 2016. The production was aired on December 2 of that year.
Penny Goes Metropolitan Jr.[edit]
Penny Goes Metropolitan Jr. is a musical licensed by Music Theatre International's Broadway Junior collection, specially edited to be performed by children in a shortened form. It is performed internationally every year by acting academies, programs, schools, and theatre camps. MTI also licenses another youth version of the show, called Penny Goes Metropolitan KIDS, a 30-minute length version meant for elementary-aged performers.
