Peter R. Mouton
Peter Randolph Mouton is an American medical scientist and inventor. He is president and chief scientific officer of SRC Biosciences in Tampa, Florida and serves as professor in the Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering (voluntary appointment) at the College of Engineering at University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.[1]
Early life and education
Mouton was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Florida. He earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry in 1983 from University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida, USA. In 1990 he received a Ph.D. in neuroscience from USF. In 2008 he earned a Master’s degree in Medical & Scientific Writing from The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland).[2]
In 1987–88 Mouton completed a one-year predoctoral fellowship in neurobiology at the Karolinska Institute, a medical university in Stockholm, Sweden, with support from the American-Scandinavian Foundation. During this time he was encouraged by his advisor, Professor Lars Olson, to attend a week-long stereology course at Aarhus University (Aarhus, Denmark) organized by Drs. Hans Juergen G. Gundersen, Bente Pakkenberg, and Mark West. On completion of that course Dr. Gundersen invited him to return to Denmark for further training in Stereology. Following defense of his Ph.D. dissertation in 1990, Mouton completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in neurostereology at the University of Kobenhavn (Copenhagen, Denmark) under the direction of Professor Gundersen and Dr. Bente Pakkenberg with support from the Danish Medical Research Council. In 1992 he returned to the United States for a two-year NIH-sponsored post-doctoral fellowship in neuropathology at the Pathology Department in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, USA under the mentorship of Professor Donald L. Price, M.D. In 2004–2005 he completed a one-year sabbatical in neurohistology with Professor Luis Miguel Garcia-Segura at the Instituto de Ramon y Cajal in Madrid, Spain with funding by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education. From 2018 to 2021 Mouton completed Fulbright Scholarships (Specialist) at the Charles University at Prague, Czech Republic (2018); and Universitaria Pascual Brava in Medellin, Columbia (2021).[3]
Career
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mouton received formal training in the principles and applications of unbiased stereology to biological tissues under the mentorship of Prof. dr. Hans Gundersen in Denmark. Since then, he has trained a generation of bioscientists, technicians, and students with stereology books[4] and in-person or on-line stereology courses, workshops, webinars, and publications.[5]
Over the last 20 years[timeframe?] Mouton and colleagues have developed a microscope-based device that uses computer software for collecting stereology data from stained biological tissue sections. A recent modification is an artificial intelligence-based machine learning approach to quantify objects (cells, fibers, pathology) in bright-field and fluorescent images. The system (approach + device) is the automatic collection of accurate stereology data while relieving well-trained scientists from the task of manually collecting data in a subjective manner. This work is done in collaboration with Profs. Dmitry Goldgof and Larry Hall and computer science graduate students in the Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering at USF in Tampa. Funding for this project is provided by grants from the National Science Foundation with further support from matching grants by the Florida High Tech Corridor.[6]
