Peter Roempert
Peter Römpert (born 1944 in Eilenburg, Germany; died January 6, 2022 in Asperg, Germany) was a German sculptor, woodcut artist, and painter.
Life and education
In 1967, Römpert began studying design and art at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart. He turned to sculpture and studied it from 1968 to 1973 at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, and from 1973 to 1974 at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. He was a master student under Herbert Baumann, Rudolf Daudert, and Gabriel Stanulis.
From 1975 onward, he lived in Asperg and worked as a freelance artist in his studios in Bietigheim-Bissingen and, during the winter months, on the Italian island of Stromboli. His main focus was on sculptures and woodcuts. His preferred material was wood, while he often used terracotta for reliefs and small sculptures.
The central themes of his work were the artistic examination of the Holocaust and National Socialism. Interpersonal relationships—especially between women and men—were also key subjects in his art. A prime example is his 1986 woodcut Lonely Togetherness, which references Plato’s myth of the spherical humans.
His 2000 sculpture Primordial Parental Couple is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and is on permanent display as part of the Sculptoura exhibition in the Heckengäu region.
Peter Römpert’s work Execution Block (2015) was added to the Jerg Ratgeb Sculpture Trail in 2019.
The Municipal Gallery of Bietigheim-Bissingen houses an extensive selection of Römpert’s woodcuts.
