Peter Szolovits is a computer science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a full professor in the MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). He conducts research using methods of artificial intelligence for problems related to medical decision-making, including using natural language processing to extract meaning from electronic health records and design better healthcare information systems[1]. His papers have received more than 23,000 citations to date[2].

Szolovits received his bachelor's degree in physics and his PhD in information science, both from the California Institute of Technology[3]. He leads CSAIL's Clinical Decision-Making Group, which applies advanced computing and artificial intelligence techniques to improve healthcare[4]. His work has included harnessing machine learning models to more efficiently search electronic health records for clinically relevant information and generate novel questions for doctors to ask patients[5]. He has also developed algorithms that can predict intensive-care-unit stay-times across different electronic health record platforms[6], and helped create the open-source database MIMIC-III, which includes information relating to patients admitted to critical care units at a large tertiary care hospital.

Szolovits was elected to the National Academy of Medicine[1] and is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI)[7], the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence[8]. He has also served as a member of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council (United States)[9].
