Peter Tuchman is a stock trader on the floor of the NYSE in New York City.

Dubbed “The Most Photographed Trader on Wall Street”[1][2], “Wall Street's most recognizable trader”[3],"The most famous stock trader on Wall Street"[4], "NYSE's Most Iconic Stockbroker"[5][6], “The most photographed person at the NYSE”[7], "Wall Street's Most Photographed Broker"[8], "Most Recognizable Broker On The Floor Of The New York Stock Exchange"[9] his face is widely recognized, as it has been and is still used as the background prop to thousands of stock market stories.[1][10][8][11][12]

Early life

Tuchman Grew up in the upper west side in New York City. He was born in 1958 into a Jewish family. His mother Shoshana Itzkovich was born in Hungary and father Marcel Tuchman was born Poland in 1921.[13] Thay are Holocaust survivors who met in a Displaced persons camp after the war. They came to the United States in 1949.

His father is a retired doctor[14] and Author[15] who practiced medicine from 1950 up until 2017. After the war, he and 30 survivors applied to Heidelberg University to go to medical school. He was part of the first group of Jewish students allowed in a German medical school in post-Nazi Germany. He stayed in Germany until 1949, finished his degree and came to the U.S. for residency and an internship at Bellevue Hospital.

Tuchman's mother Shoshana passed away in 2014.[10]

Marcel worked as a slave laborer for the German industrial conglomerate Siemens (then Siemens-Schucker) and returned to Germany to testify at a war-crimes trial against the Nazi who had murdered his mother.[16]

Education and Professional career

Tuchman graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where he studied economics and agriculture. He came to New York City to get an MBA in business. He opened a record store on Bleecker Street, ran a music production business for two years, then worked in West Africa for a Norwegian oil company called Saga Petroleum.

On May 23 1985, thru a patient of his father who ran a brokerage on the floor of the NYSE, Tuchman got a summer job as a teletypist for Cowen and Company on the floor of the exchange and has been on the floor of the NYSE ever since.

After spending most of the 1990's specializing in convertible arbitrage with Lee Securities, Peter became an independent broker and honed his trading expertise over the next decade. Peter joined Quattro Securities in 2011.[17]

His biggest trade was 10 million shares he once traded. He says that on any given day, he may trade a couple of hundred million dollars of stocks.

On the rise of Electronic trading, Tuchman said: "We did not become more productive, there is nothing productive about the new technology, in my opinion. There was a lot more communication, transparency, a lot more volume back then."[1]

Recognition

Tuchman's photo is wildly recognized for its affiliation to market news.

His photo is often chosen to go together with news about Wall-Street especially on days of market volatility, for the strong emotional expressions expresses of Anguish, Anticipation, Desperation, and Triumph on Tuchman’s face, which he says is 100 percent genuine, pure, honest emotion.

Some say he has a resemblance to Albert Einstein, and this is what makes his photo intriguing.[10][2][9]

Personal life

Tuchman has two kids, Benjamin and Lucy.[18] Benjamin is a Broker on the floor of the NYSE. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Jeffrey Tuchman was his brother.[19] When Jeffrey died in 2017 at age 62 he was working on a documentary "Testimony" about their father's testimony at a war-crimes trial against the Nazi who had murdered his mother.[20][21]

Although he has been in the stock marker business for 33 years Tuchman says he has never owned a stock in his life. He says if he started to worry about my own profit and loss, he would be less concentrated on my customers’ well-being. And that he has two children in college, and doesn’t have any money to buy stocks.[10]

Tuchman's wrists are covered in bracelets that jingle as he walks the NYSE floor. "They put up a sign once citing me for excessive jewelry" He says.
