Peter van Huffel (born 6 September 1978 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian jazz musician, saxophonist, clarinetist and composer based in Berlin.[1]
Biography
Van Huffel grew up in Kingston, Ontario. At the age of twelve, he first learned to play the clarinet, but switched to alto saxophone at the age of 13. His career began in Toronto. From 2002 to 2008 he lived in New York. During this time, he made a name for himself on the local jazz scene. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music. In 2008, he moved to Berlin.[2]
Van Huffel's saxophone playing is considered particularly intense and powerful, which is particularly evident in the recordings of his punk jazz trio Gorilla Mask. He cooperates among others with his wife, the Belgian singer Sophie Tassignon. He has also performed with Alex Maksimyiv, Andreas Willers, Oliver Steidle, Michael Bates, Jeff Davis, Chris Potter, Donny McCaslin, David Binney, Tony Malaby and Julie Sassoon.[3]
