Phil Wiser
Phil Wiser is a technology and digital media entrepreneur and executive. He has been Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ViacomCBS since December 2019, formerly holding the same position at CBS Corporation before the merger with Viacom.[1]
At ViacomCBS, Wiser is driving the global technology strategy, operations and transformation. He oversaw the launch of Slack[2] to the entire company and has commented on the company’s efforts to move broadcast operations to the cloud.[3]
Career
CBS
Wiser became the CTO of CBS Corporation in early 2018[4] where he led the company’s entire technology strategy and digital transformation. Wiser oversaw several important initiatives including the launch of DABL, CBS’s first 100% cloud-based linear channel,[5] and the record-breaking streaming audience for Super Bowl LIII.[6]
Hearst
From 2012 to 2018, Wiser was the Chief Technology Officer of Hearst where he implemented start-up tactics within the expansive, cross-divisional technology groups.[7][8] As the CTO, Wiser worked to execute a unified technology strategy that focused on an agile mindset and "bringing new technologies to the company that accelerate product development and enable creative teams to move faster"[9]. He spearheaded the company’s move to the cloud and championed major technology shifts in artificial intelligence and other evolving technologies.[10] During his tenure, Wiser also hosted multiple Tech Summits and Hackathons within the organization to bring the technical and product communities together and deep dive into topics and use cases that would drive the company forward.[11][12]
Sezmi
Wiser returned to the start-up industry in 2006 as the co-founder of Sezmi, a revolutionary broadcast television delivery platform that offered full cable bundles over the Internet. Sezmi was a low-cost alternative for consumers looking to cut cable that provided a recording capability and featured the first successful TV program recommendation technology.[13] At Sezmi, Wiser secured content licensing deals with the networks and oversaw its US and International launches before the company was acquired in 2011.[14][15]
Sony Music & Sony Corporation
Wiser became the CTO of Sony Music Entertainment Inc. in 2002 and built up their digital businesses by creating a major deal with iTunes and then driving the creation of the US master ringtone market. He formed Sony Music’s Digital Business Group which focused its digital activities on revenue growth and profit and oversaw the company’s entire technology strategy and digital businesses.[16]
In 2005, Wiser became the CTO of Sony Corporation America where he was tasked with rethinking how Sony leverages its digital music infrastructure, media technologies, and digital service businesses including Sony Connect, its online music store.[17]
Liquid Audio
In 1996, Wiser co-founded Liquid Audio, Inc., a pioneering digital music company that delivered music software and services over the Internet.[18][19] During his tenure, he became the Chief Technology Officer and was part of the company’s collaboration with Sony to deliver music to portable audio players over the Internet.[20] His work contributed to the development of key technological advancements that enable the digital music marketplace.[21]
Education and Early Life
Wiser grew up in Essex, Maryland and attended Eastern Vocational Technical High School. During high school, he was the bass guitarist and original member of the Baltimore rock band Child’s Play. The group formed in 1983 and Wiser departed the band in 1987.[22]
He graduated summa cum laude in 1990 from the University of Maryland College Park with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.[23] In 1993, he received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
After completing his masters, Wiser worked extensively in Silicon Valley developing audio algorithms, audio processing systems, and other digital media technologies.[24] He holds 19 patents issued for his work over the years.[25]
In 2005, Wiser received the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award from The University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering.[26]
