Tobias Ellehammer is a director, producer, choreographer and dancer, born in Copenhagen, 1993 to Louise Ellehammer and Johnnie Müller. Most people know him for his grand scale conceptual tribute dance videos to the Jackson family, his choreography on the Martin Jensen (DJ) “Solo Dance” music video and his work with Super Junior on their 2017 comeback single “Black Suit”.[citation needed]
Life and career
Tobias was born (1993) in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. He lived with his parents in multiple cities all across Denmark and also spent a year living in Stockholm. He took his first dance class when he was 11 years old and started teaching his own choreography at the age of 15. Tobias graduated in 2011 from the privately owned dance education Danseuddannelsen by Sara Gaardbo.
Dancer
He instantly after graduating, started working as a professional dancer in Denmark associated with many different genres within the entertainment industry, such as theater, artist performance and TV shows. He repeatedly worked on the Sommerballet at Bellevue Teatret in the years 2011, 2012, 2014, toured around Europe with artist Aura Dione in 2013, worked on Cirkusrevyen 2013 alongside dancer Stephanie Nguyen, and worked on the Danish Eurovision Song Contest also known as DMGP in the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2014 Tobias accompanied Danish Eurovision winner Basim (singer) onto the international Eurovision Song Contest, as a backup dancer[1][2].
In 2013 Tobias booked his first international job at the X Factor and his commercial career quickly exploded from there. He managed to work with recording artists such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Tom Jones (singer), Jason Derulo, Kiesza, Tini Stoessel (also known as Martina Stoessel) and Kylie Minogue within a few years. He also featured as a dancer in the Walt Disney film Tini: The Movie in 2016.
Direction and choreography
Tobias started focusing his career onto choreography/direction and quickly went on to direct and choreograph for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Liam Payne, Steps[3], Olly Murs, the Korean boy band Super Junior and BTS (band) solo member Jungkook[4]. He choreographed and creative directed the Martin Jensen (DJ) - Solo Dance (song) Music Video[5] (2017) that featured dancers from all around the globe[6][7]. The choreography was replicated for the TV show Dance Dance Dance (UK TV series) both in Germany and Netherlands. Tobias choreographed the summer and winter tour for Infernal (Danish band) in 2017 and 2018 and choreographed the Christopher (singer) “Bad” music video[8] in 2018. In 2017 he also choreographed and artistic directed the highly anticipated Super Junior comeback single “Black Suit” for both their live performance[9] and Music Video[10][11][12]. He featured in the Korean reality show SJ Returns[13][14] as himself teaching the Super Junior band members the choreography. Throughout the years Tobias became known for his unique style with his choreography and has been considered by many to break boundaries within the dance community and entertainment industry.
World of Dance
In 2019 Tobias featured on the third season of the US dance reality tv competition World of Dance (TV series) aired on NBC, alongside the EZtwins from Ljubljana in Slovenia[15][16][17][18]. The show was judged by Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough. The judges commented the following:
Ne-Yo: “I always find myself looking for the wow moment. There wasn’t one because the whole piece was one. You didn’t need a big, elaborate trick because your transitions were so clean, like you guys were dancing with one brain. And the roll-off moment — it was just crystal-clear, clean, precise all the way through. I’m impressed. That was dope.”
Jennifer Lopez: “I thought it was super cool, and it had its own style. Just like your clothes, it had its own specific style. That’s what makes people stand out in this competition. It’s like, ‘Oh man, we can’t wait until they get back out here because they do something that nobody else does.’ And that was the biggest impression for me. That’s what you aim for, for people to have these amazing pictures that stay in their minds after your performance is over, and that’s what I had with the three of you … Wow, I need them to dance for me.”
Derek Hough: “Just thoughtful choreography, intelligent. You’re utilizing the trio. There’s all these beautiful, symmetrical shapes that were so pleasing to the eye to see. The whole package was just on point. So good.”
Projects
Tobias gained worldwide attention when he created a series of dance videos named The Jackson Trilogy[19] consisting of episode one in 2015 BurnItUp! episode two in 2016 Black Or White[20][21][22][23][24] and episode three in 2019 Scream[25][26][27]. All these videos were entirely self funded by Tobias himself and were filmed all around the world set to the music of Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson. In all 3 of the videos Tobias left a quote around the end credits in order to signify the message the different videos represent. Only the third and final video quote was written by Tobias himself.
BurnItUp!
The first video was filmed all around the city of London to the song BurnItUp by Janet Jackson feat. Missy Elliot. Both Janet and Missy expressed their support of the video by sharing it onto their social media platforms. The video currently has 3.5 million views on YouTube.
Video quote: Stay versatile
Black Or White
The 2nd video was set to the song Black or White by Michael Jackson with inspiration from the music video that came out in 1991. For this one Tobias filmed scenes in 14 countries and the video went viral through many media sources with all together a total of over 20 mil. Views[28]. The video was shared and supported by Billboard on Facebook and was nominated for concept video of the year by World of Dance industry awards in 2017[29]. BTS (band) members Jungkook and Jimin (singer, born 1995) replicated different choreography sections from the video, into their own live MJ tribute performance[30], also set to the song Black or White.
Video quote: Humanity should be our race. Love should be our religion.
Scream
In 2019 Tobias released the final video of the trilogy set to the song Scream by Michael & Janet Jackson. The video aimed to connect all three videos, making the story come full circle, and Tobias expressed that this video was the most personal project he had ever worked on and that he had been working on it for a total of 2 years. The video was filmed in 8 different countries. Super Junior band members Lee Donghae and Eunhyuk supported the video by sharing it on to their social media platforms, encouraging their fans to watch and support the video.
Video quote: Humanity must aim to understand its differences in order for fear to dissolve and life to begin.
Family
Tobias is related to the world known inventor Jacob Ellehammer who invented the Ellehammer Triplane in 1908.
