Phillip "Doc" Martin

Phillip “Doc” Martin is an American saxophonist and board certified dentist.

Life and career[edit]

Phillip “Doc” Martin started playing the saxophone through the Broward County public school system, and rose in skill, becoming the first chair of Florida's All State Jazz Band in high school.[1] While playing in his college program at University of Central Florida, he was hired to play with Sam Rivers, Kirk Whalum, Sunnie Paxton, and more.[2]

Martin released his first album in 2003, Saxappeal, and has gone on to release six additional albums in the years following. On his 2009 album, Realization, multiple tracks earned airplay on Sirius XM Watercolors and The Weather Channel including "Deep Pockets" and "Realization".[3]

In 2020, Martin featured on the track "Vibin' in Time" with Alex Parchment, which went #1 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Charts.[4] In 2022, his song "The Doc Is In (The House)” reached #9 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Charts.[5] Martin is currently signed to Saxtime! Entertainment records, and is endorsed by Eastman Winds.[6]

Early Life and Career Outside of Music[edit]

Martin was born to Jamaican parents in Indiana, but grew up in South Florida. After graduating at University of Central Florida, Martin attended dentistry school at the Howard University College of Dentistry, making the decision to become a dentist as well as a full-time independent artist. He is currently a board certified dentist that lives and works in the Washington, DC area with his own practice, Quality Dental of Bowie.[7]
