Nicolas Porter (also known as Dr. Nico) is an American dentist, speaker, and entrepreneur.[1][2] He is the founder of Risas Dental and Braces.[3][4]
Early life and education[edit]
Porter was raised in the small town of Heber, Arizona as the fifth of eight children. In 2008, he graduated from dental school at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Career[edit]
Dr. Nico is a general practice dentist and entrepreneur.[5][6] He founded Risas Dental and Braces in 2011.[7] [8] As of January 2020, the dental company has 25 clinics in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas.[9] Each clinic is located in areas with considerable Hispanic population and is staffed with at least one Spanish speaking team member while the rest of teams are bilingual.[10][11][12]
Community Involvement[edit]
Dr. Nicolas Porter launched the 'Labor of Love Day' program in celebration of the opening of his first clinic. Each Risas clinic offers free dental care on Labor Day each year.[13][14] As of 2019, the company has given away over USD 5.5 million in free dental care through this initiative.[15]
He also launched the "#SmileEquality Tour" in 2015. The movement began in Peru with the aim to perform random acts of kindness to strangers.[16][17]
Recognition[edit]
Dr. Porter received the 2014 Health Care Hero award by the Phoenix Business Journal[18] and was named one of Phoenix Business Journal’s “Most Admired Leaders of 2015".[19]
Phoenix Business Journal also recognized Risas Dental as the Best Place to Work in 2014 followed by the same recognition by Denver Business Journal in 2015.[20] Phoenix Chamber of Commerce conferred Risas Dental with the Impact Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence for their service to the community in 2014.[21]
