Phoebus the Knight
Phoebus the Knight is a Symphonic metal band founded in 2019 by Axel de Montalembert, singer and story writer, and Adrien Djouadou, former composer, singer and guitar player of the bands Frost and Nobelium. The band is known for being a concept band, melding the musical act with a story linking Heroic fantasy and History. According to the band's website: "PHOEBUS is a symphonic metal band with a whole conceptual and visual universe (...) The music is linked with a story unfolding through its lyrically sung parts, grandiose orchestrations and epic metal riffs. (...) PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT finds its roots in bands like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Powerwolf, Cradle of Filth, Rhapsody, Fairyland …".[1]
The band is telling the story, written by Axel de Montalembert, of the fight between the alchemical order of the knights of Heliopolis and the one called the Beast, a malevolent entity trying to bring eternal war upon the world with his armies of demons and vampires. Each member of the band embodies characters from the knights of Heliopolis, with the exception of Axel de Montalembert, who also plays the role of the Beast on stage with the help of different costumes.
In June 2022 they released their first EP, The Last Guardian, which was well received by critics. The EP focuses on the beginning of the French Revolution and how the Beast will manage to help trigger it and use it to his advantage, while the knights of Heliopolis will try to bring goodness upon the world with the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The Beast manages to kidnap one of the greatest allies of the light, Selene, the last guardian, beloved of Phoebus. The EP is described as follows by some critics: "Four well-filled tracks, armed with choral forces with stentorian voices full of chest, orchestral flights worthy of the greatest epics, seizing melodies, supported by sharp rhythms; this is what we get by frank shovelfuls in 'The Last Guardian'!"[2] (Blastpheme). The band then started a small series of concerts in France and Switzerland from September 2022 to December 2022 to promote the EP. In January 2023, they released their debut album, Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror, which was also well received by critics. The album has the particularity of being mixed and mastered by Joost van den Broek (who worked on several releases by Epica (band) and Powerwolf for example) and has its cover and artwork drawn by the French comic drawer Mohamed Aouamri. This album starts right where the EP ended. According to Axel de Montalembert, the story is told in the following way: "The album unfolds in three acts. In the first, Phoebus goes in search of his beloved Selene, who was captured in the Ep “The Last Guardian”. In the second, we follow the unholy journey of the Beast to the heart of the underworld and, finally, in the third, we witness the coup d'état of the Jacobins, helped by the Beast in Paris, at the beginning of the Terror and the fight between Phoebus and the troops of evil." [3]The album is described as follows by some critics: "a sensational performance of operatic overtures combined with symphonic Metal majesty to create a masterpiece"[4] (Metal Gods TV).
