Phoenix Medical Systems is an Indian medical device manufacturer headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1989 by V. Sashi Kumar, the company designs, manufactures, and services equipment for neonatal and maternal healthcare, with additional product lines in assistive technology and critical care.[3] The company's products are distributed in more than 60 countries and it operates three manufacturing facilities in India.
History
Phoenix Medical Systems was founded in 1989 by V. Sashi Kumar, a graduate of IIT Madras (M.S., Entrepreneurship) and IIM (Business Leadership), with an initial investment of ₹75,000.[3] According to company materials, Kumar was prompted to enter the medical device business during a student internship after visiting a neonatal centre where imported equipment was inoperative; he began repairing the devices and later launched Phoenix to manufacture comparable products locally.[3]
The company launched its first product, the NOC-100 Neonatal Open Care system, in 1993. Subsequent milestones include ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2002, U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for the NWS-100 Infant Warmer in 2003, and ISO 13485:2003 certification in 2005.[4] Between 2008 and 2011 the company obtained CE marking for its phototherapy units, infant beds and warmers. In 2014, in collaboration with IIT Madras, Phoenix introduced the INC-200 incubator and entered the assistive technology segment with the SmartCane, an electronic mobility aid developed with IIT Delhi.[5]
In 2017 the company launched NeoBreathe, described as the first foot-operated newborn resuscitation device with integrated suction. The Arise standing wheelchair, developed jointly with IIT Madras, followed in 2019. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Phoenix introduced the Numo critical-care ventilator in 2020, which received the NASSCOM Engineering & Innovation Excellence Award for "Engineered-in-India Product of the Year" in 2021.[6] The Brammi neonatal hypothermia therapy system was launched in 2023.
