Pibby (also known as Come and Learn with Pibby! and Learning with Pibby: Apocalypse) is a adult animated comedy horror action proof-of-concept short/cancelled television series created and developed by Dodge Greenley. Set in a fictionalized multiverse encompassing cartoons from the Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network library, Pibby focuses on three cartoon characters who must unite forces as an eldritch glitch-like entity begins to transform iconic characters into corrupted zombie-like versions of themselves.[1][2]
Premise[edit]
When a preschool educational television series is invaded by a malevolent entity, the protagonist, Pibby, escapes into different animated programs only for the entity to transform various cartoon characters into corrupted zombie-like versions of themsleves. Along the way, Pibby teams up with a cliché superhero sidekick, Alloy Boy, and a Disney-influenced villainess, Melira, to fight back against the entity. Although none of them are traditional heroes, they along with many others have to learn to work together to grow up and save the multiverse.
Characters[edit]
- Pibby (voiced by Nikki Castillo): a Dora the Explorer-esque preschool character. She is a reluctant hero, wanting to stay childlike forever, but when her origin series is invaded, Pibby will be forced to grow up and become the hero that she needed to be from the start.
- Alloy Boy (voiced by Marcus Toji): a Robin-esque superhero sidekick.
- Melira (voiced by Alex Newell): a Cruella de Vil-esque anthropomorphic cat who serves as an antagonist in her origin series. She is a rude and self-centered individual who begrudgingly becomes companions with Pibby and Alloy Boy.
- BunBun (voiced by Jack Stanton): Pibby's innocent rabbit friend who got corrupted by the glitch.
Production[edit]
Concept[edit]
On November 3, 2020, The Cartoon Network, Inc. filed a trademark with the name Learning with Pibby: Apocalypse.[3]
On October 30, 2021, Dodge Greenley posted the series' first promotional poster on his Instagram account while Adult Swim's YouTube channel released the series' concept trailer online.[4] The trailer was animated by the Mexican studio Mighty Animation.[4][5]
On April 1, 2022, as an April Fools' Day stunt, Adult Swim cameoed Pibby, BunBun, and the unnamed malevolent corruption entity in some of its programming on that day, including Rick and Morty, Smiling Friends, The Eric Andre Show, Aqua TV Show Show, Birdgirl, and Joe Pera Talks With You, as well as in the network's bumpers.[6] The prank ran from midnight to 2:00 am, repeating from 3:00 am to 5:00 am, and simulcasted on Adult Swim in Canada. Adult Swim's YouTube premiered the event on a delay, and later posted a compilation of all the alterations done to the programs and bumpers in the night's prank.[7] They also changed billboards advertising Adult Swim on HBO Max to show Pibby and BunBun, as well as the glitchy darkness.[8]
Cancellation[edit]
On October 3, 2023, Dodge Greenley announced on Instagram that the series did not receive the green light.[9]
Storyboard leaks[edit]
From March of 2022 to April of 2024, 10 minutes of webcam recorded storyboard leaks (with audio, music, and dialogue from the real actors) were leaked on YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter, showing a supposed pilot episode of Pibby.
In April, these leaks were confirmed to be real, as Dodge Greenley released 450 storyboards on the software Toon Boom and his website, meaning that the show is in production. [10]
