Gacha is a group of mobile apps developed by Lunime. In these apps, the player can dress up anime-syled characters and create videos. The apps are currently popular with YouTubers and TikTok users.

History[edit]

In the 2010s, online gacha games gained a strong userbase in East Asia. In 2015, an independent video game developer called Lunime (Founded by Lucas Lee or “Luni”), released an app aimed at young adults called Anime Arcade. Another app based on the game, called Anime Gacha, was also made. Due to the app being successful, Lunime continued to develop gacha games.

From 2015 onward, Lunime continued to develop more games. All of these games had the same RPG-style base, only differing in characters. While these games were only relatively successful, they were the springboard to the success of Lunime’s other apps. Since these apps became popular to kids, Lucas Lee made changes in later games.

A official YouTube channel, called “GachaTube”, was made in 2018, which is run by Lucas Lee’s sister, Charlotte. In the channel, various YouTubers can post their own videos made using Gacha games specifically to the channel (by email).

When Gacha Life came out in 2018, it later became popular and a huge success on YouTube. This later came to Lunime, in which they made a sequel, called “Gacha Club”.

Apps[edit]

All apps in this series are available for iOS, Android, and PC platforms.

Gacha Life[edit]

Gacha Life is the most popular Lunime Gacha app, released in October 2018. as with the previous games, the player can make chibi characters and play minigames. The game also has a "Life" mode in which the player can meet characters and other players in the game. Though it may seem peaches and cream, many turned this game to a game for everyone, to a game for adults.

Gacha Club[edit]

Gacha Club (originally titled Gacha Life 2) is a sequel to Gacha Life.[1] It has a nightclub theme that is not present in the other Lunime Gacha apps. As with the previous games, the player can customize and create characters, and they can also create their own videos. Unlike the other games in the franchise, Gacha Club is meant for ages 10+ and features a battle mode instead of the “Life” mode.

Reception and fandom[edit]

The popularity of Lunime's Gacha apps led to Gacha content being published on the Internet by people called "GachaTubers". The term GachaTuber is a portmanteau of "Gacha" and "YouTuber". It refers to a YouTuber who creates videos using Gacha apps. Some of these content creators, however, also publish their videos on platforms such as TikTok. Gacha videos became popular in the late 2010s, and they saw a spike in popularity in 2020 due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

These users often edit with cheap software such as KineMaster and PowerDirector, with screenbugs showing. Although it is rare, some of these YouTubers use software such as Live2D Cubism and the unofficial Gacha Animator. Most Gacha YouTube videos feature kemonomimi-esque characters in melodramatic situations. Some of these videos have feature characters from popular media franchises.

Despite their popularity, Gacha videos have been criticized by various reviewers for their adult themes (particularly incest), poor storytelling, and nonsensical or random stories.[citation needed]
