picjumbo is a website providing free stock photos in high-resolution for both personal and commercial use.[1] The site was created in November 2013 by designer, photographer and WordPress developer Viktor Hanacek and since then new content (free stock photos) is added daily.[2]

The website is known for its “safety” against stolen photos because until 2019 all photos were taken by the founder himself[3] and even today it is not publicly allowed to upload photos to this website.

Today, the site is used by hundreds of thousands users every month[4] and you can find picjumbo photos in campaigns, apps and websites (and even books[5][6]) all over the world. On a regular basis, picjumbo is receiving mentions and features in leading online magazines and blogs like Entrepreneur, Forbes, Inc, Medium, Buffer, Hypebeast, The Next Web or WebdesignerDepot.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

History[edit]

In 2013, photographer Viktor Hanacek was rejected on several major stock photo websites due to “insufficient quality”.[15] As a designer he knew exactly what kind of photos other designers are looking for, so he used his WordPress skills and created the first version of picjumbo website. It was paid website at first, each picture was $1.99[16], but because the founder had no money to promote the website, he came up with an idea to release all his photos for free, one photo a day.

The photos were totally free: there was no watermark, no need for registration, no need to credit the author, no “like/tweet this for download”.

During the first year, people had downloaded over 750,000 photos and the site reached over 1 million monthly views.[17]

In 2019, the download counter reached 7 million and the founder invited his photography colleagues to publish their own free photos to the site.[18]

In 2019, there was also an attempt originating in China to illegally clone the whole website for Chinese market. The founder was able to detect this easily thanks to forgotten ad code on cloned website. With cooperation of Chinese registrars, they were able to take down this website in a few days.[19]

Features[edit]

Authors are providing all photos free of charge for commercial and personal use. There is no need for registration on the site and all stock photos are only in high resolution. The website is responsive, searchable through tags, categories and search bar, and photos can be easily downloaded via desktop or smartphone browser.

Since January 2014, picjumbo provides paid PREMIUM Membership where subscribers receive never published photos and new thematic stock photo collections every month together with access to library of all previously published premium content.

In 2018, inspired by Apple, this website added optional dark mode UI for better browsing at night.[20]

Popularity[edit]

In 2014, picjumbo photo was selected by the team in LG for their flagship-level smartphone LG G3 as a wallpaper.[21]

In 2016, Gary Vaynerchuck featured a selection of picjumbo photos in his Hustler’s Digest newsletter.[22]

Visitors and users[edit]

During years 2013-2019, and without almost any paid advertising, more than 10+ million people visited picjumbo website.[23] 17.16% from United States, 10.37% from China, 6.08% from South Korea, 5.16% from India and 4.14% from France. 63.43% of users are using Google Chrome browser.

License[edit]

Unlike competing services like Unsplash, Pixabay or Pexels, photos on picjumbo were never published under Creative Commons zero (CC0) license because the founder didn’t want people to freely republish photos from picjumbo to any competing website or to create one. Therefore, picjumbo has its own license providing photos free of charge for personal and commercial use but selling, reselling or republishing the photos for download on other (competing) websites is not allowed. Attribution is not required.[24][25]

Technology[edit]

Since the first day, picjumbo website is running on free and open-source content management system (CMS) WordPress written in PHP and paired with a MySQL database. Website content is hosted on a dedicated server (SuperMicro 1U: Intel Xeon E3 3.3 GHz, 32GB RAM, 1Gbps connectivity) located in Czech Republic and distributed by content-delivery-network (CDN) Cloudflare. The CDN serves around 428 GB of data traffic every day[26] and also protects picjumbo website against cyberattacks and DDoS attacks.

In 2019, the founder unveiled it costs $900-$2,000/month to technologically run the site.[27]
