Pigeonhole Live
Pigeonhole Live, developed by PigeonLab Pte Ltd and founded on 23 October 2010,[1] is a software-as-a-service platform offering audience response tools including Q&A software, polls, and surveys.
History
Early days
The co-founders of Pigeonhole Live studied biomedical science as undergraduates at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In 2009, they participated in the iLEAD programme, which offered internships at local start-ups and exposure to the entrepreneurial environment.[2]
In 2010, the founders finished their undergraduate studies. While preparing for their honours program, they participated in a video conference. Due to connectivity issues, they could see the presenters but had difficulty hearing them, prompting them to submit their questions via Skype.[3]
Incorporation
Recognising a need for improved Q&A management, the founders enrolled in an entrepreneurship course at NUS. Subsequently, they established Pigeonhole Live and were incubated at NUS Enterprise. That year, they also received the YES! Start-up Grant from SPRING Singapore.[4]
Growth
In 2012, Pigeonhole Live was identified as one of 14 startups to watch by Tech in Asia. It was described as a “...mobile, real-time conference question and answer (Q&A) tool…[that] enables attendees at conferences to post and vote for questions using their mobile devices on mobile browsers.”[5]
During a 2015 speech by the Ministry of Trade & Industry, at the launch of TechSG at BLOCK71, Pigeonhole Live was mentioned as a startup that benefited from NUS Enterprise's support.[6]
Integrations
Pigeonhole Live can be integrated with applications including Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint. Additionally, it is compatible with event platforms such as Brightcove, Splash, Hopin, and Kaltura,[7] along with live video streaming platforms like Kollective, Vimeo and YouTube.[8]
Pigeonhole Live also provides an open application programming interface (API) for developers.[9]
Trivia
The design of Pigeonhole Live's logo takes inspiration from the domestic pigeon. The company's name, chosen by the co-founders, reflects the pigeonholes previously used in schools for conveying messages to students.[10]
Reception
The Harvard Business Review cited Pigeonhole Live as an example of a tool that could be used to assess alignment within leadership teams. Using an anonymous feedback feature could highlight undisclosed viewpoints, encourage open discussions, and support informed decision-making.[11]
In Kiasunomics 2: Economic Insights For Everyday Life, Pigeonhole Live is described during a discussion on wealth mobility as a “mobile, real-time question-and-answer tool that allows the audience to post and vote for questions using their smartphones.”[12]
In Educating for the 21st Century: Perspectives, Policies and Practices from Around the World, Pigeonhole Live is given as an example of a web-based application “which is used to gather student responses in real time during class via different mobile platforms.”[13]
