Early life[edit]

Albo was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Canada in 1962. Her parents owned an Italian grocery store, where she worked as a cashier starting at age 10. This early responsibility, combined with her parents’ encouragement, resulted in a strong work ethic and awareness of the importance of education.[2]

Between 1980 and 1987, Albo attended university in Canada. She went to the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba between 1980 and 1983, from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.[3] She earned a Juris Doctor at York University-Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Ontario in 1987.[4] In 1989, she graduated from France’s l’Université d’Aix-Marseille III with a Maîtrise en Droit, International and European Community Law.[5]

Work history[edit]

Albo practiced law at the Toronto firm Tory’s LLP.[6][7] She worked primarily in the area of real estate law, but also had exposure to corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions.[8] After relocating to Europe, she joined the insurance industry in 1992 as a claims expert for Munich Reinsurance Company (Munich Re) based in Germany.[9] [10] Her roles there included:

  • Claims expert (1992)[9]
  • Underwriter, directors and officers (D&O) and employment practices liability (EPL) (1995)[9]
  • Head of casualty North America, United Kingdom and international D&O / EPL (1999)[9]

Albo has sat on numerous organizations’ boards. She served as a board member for the Reinsurance Association of America, which included acting as secretary-treasurer between 2013 and 2014.[12] She was also a member of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation board of governors between 2010 and 2012.[13][14] Additionally, Albo is both a member of the IFG Companies board of governance, and sits on its Leadership Development and Compensation Committee.[15]

Recognition and awards[edit]

Albo has been recognized for her leadership within the insurance industry by numerous publications and associations. She was named 2011’s Insurance Woman of the Year by the Association of Professional Insurance Women.[16] In 2012, she was named as a recipient of the YWCA Princeton’s “Tribute to Women” award.[17] The following year she was awarded the inaugural Women in Insurance Luminary Leadership Award by the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation.[18] She was named a “Top Influencer” in Insurance Business America’s 2014 List of “Hot 100.”[19] Albo was also profiled in both the 2014 and 2015 Intelligent Insurer’s “100 Influential Women in Re/Insurance” issues.[20][9] In 2016, she was listed among Boston Consulting Group and Manager Magazin “Top 50 Women in Business in Germany.”[21][22]

Advocacy for women in the workplace[edit]

Albo has devoted considerable time throughout her career to advocating for women in the workplace. As a mother and a professional, she is deeply aware of the challenges women face balancing their work and personal lives.[23] Even prior to her first management position at Munich Re, Albo was instrumental in launching a women’s network at the company’s German headquarters.[24] The network addressed key issues such as opportunities for women in the company, and achievement of work/life balance. She also helped to establish a company-sponsored, bilingual daycare and after school care center for company employees.[25]

At Munich Re America, she expanded on her Germany-based initiative, working with the human resources department to formalize a company-wide women’s network that provided both networking and professional-development opportunities.[26][27] Then in 2010, she was executive sponsor of a diversity initiative created to encourage the advancement of more women and minorities within the company.[28] She has also spoken publicly about the importance to women of networking, seizing opportunities, and taking the initiative to prove capabilities.[29] In 2018, Albo was named as an ambassador to the Insurance Supper Club, a business network for women in the insurance industry.[30]

Personal life[edit]

Albo is married and has three children.[31] In her spare moments, she enjoys writing fiction and has produced two unpublished novels, one of which won first prize for women’s fiction in a writing contest. She speaks five languages: English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. [32][33]
