Pinaki Bhattacharya is a Bangladeshi doctor and human rights activist.[1] He has written 19 books on Bangladesh’s political history, society, current politics, human rights. He currently lives in Paris.[2]
Early life[edit]
According to his website, Pinaki Bhattacharya was born in 1967 in Bogra and is the eldest son of Shamol Bhattacharya, a former teacher at Bogra District School. His website states that, as a student, he was involved in left-wing politics.[1]
Social Activism[edit]
Bhattacharya uses Facebook to comment on politics and society, and has attracted significant attention for this.[3]
During the 2018 Bangladesh road-safety protests, Bhattacharya used Facebook and Twitter to criticise the Awami League government for using violence against the protestors. As a result, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officials called Bhattacharya to a meeting on 5 August 2018. Fearing for his safety, Bhattacharya did not attend the meeting and went into hiding. He said that others who had been picked up by security agencies in a similar manner had been disappeared.[4] Subsequently, his home and office was raided by the DGFI.[3] With the help of his friends, Bhattacharya left Bangladesh in January 2019 and received political asylum in France.[citation needed]
On 6 December 2022, Bhattacharya was mentioned in a U.S. Department of State press briefing, where Ned Price criticised the Bangladesh government's Digital Security Act.[5]
During a rally on 30 December 2022, leaders of the Bogra District Jubo League claimed that Bhattacharya was spreading false propaganda and anti-national sentiment, and was damaging the nations reputation. At the conclusion of the march, an effigy of Bhattacharya was burned.[6]
